Ugly scene. There was a dugout clearing because the next pitch was up and in and hit Reed Johnson in the hand. Casey McGeeheeeeee acted a turd and ran out and start yelling at the pitcher. Another player for the Marlins straight up shoved the home plate ump in the chest.

The clip is on the Deadspin link; the announcer couldn't be a bigger meatball about it. "Your big guy goes down and you need to do something about it!"

And he doesn't know the rule about swinging and missing on a pitch that hits you. It's a strike, not a foul ball. So if you already have two strikes, you're out. So the umpires clearly ruled he swung and therefore he's out.

I like when players are so out of control with rage that they charge onto the field and then slow down to allow people time to stop them.

Watching that stirred up my inner meatball. I totally would've wanted to go after Fiers if I played for Miami.

the hell?

why?

Why? Because if I were a Marlin, Stanton would presumably be my friend. And seeing Reed almost catch one in the face right afterward would've thrown me into a blind rage. And seeing Fiers mouth off would have made it worse. Not saying it wouldn't have been meatbally, just saying that's likely how I would have felt. Sorry I'm not as zen as you under all circumstances, Roshi. Perhaps one day I will walk the 8-fold path like you.

You really can't imagine how someone could get emotional when your star player gets hit in the face and then the next pitch is another HBP?

Why? Because if I were a Marlin, Stanton would presumably be my friend. And seeing Reed almost catch one in the face right afterward would've thrown me into a blind rage. And seeing Fiers mouth off would have made it worse. Not saying it wouldn't have been ultra-meatbally, just saying that's likely how I would have felt. i'm sorry but unless you think there was intent, it makes no sense to me.

i'm not even trying to be that guy. i'm not that guy. i get meatbally about stuff. hell i can turn into a raving lunatic if i'm running late and the people around me are driving too slow. a terrible accident like this isn't one of those times though. i mean, everyone is standing around looking horrified.

You realize Reed Johnson basically got drilled on the next pitch, right? That's when fictional Marlin-me would've gotten angry. If you can't fathom getting pissed at the point, you might want to ask the Wizard for a heart.

Yeah, I mean I'm a pretty reasonable guy, but if my team's best hitter took a fastball to the face, then the very next pitch is also a fastball thrown up near the next guy's face, then that pitcher starts mouthing off to the bench like he can't at all figure out why the other team is irate, then the ump simply issues a warning and ends the inning on a questionable swinging strike call...yeah, I might go full meatball and shove an ump and throw a chair. Not saying I'd be right in doing so...but it might happen.

I hope Stanton is ok, but selfishly I can't help but think how this may impact the Cubs. If an offseason trade was a possibility before, it may be less likely now. Depending on the severity of the injury, and if Stanton ends up being out the rest of the season, then there will be the question of whether he will still be the same player when he comes back. That would make it difficult to trade him and get maximum value, so I assume it becomes more likely that the Marlins would keep him into next season.

Yeah, it's the next pitch that does it for me also. It's a perception thing. It doesn't look good when you hit a guy in the face and then throw the very next pitch in the exact same spot. It's like earlier this year when Starlin went deep off a Phillies pitcher and the next time Starlin came up, the guy hit him on the first pitch and got tossed. It might not have been intentional but it doesn't look good.

Unless there's some backstory, which I doubt there is with these two teams, I doubt Fiers threw either pitch intentionally. But you can't go up and in on the very next pitch. Burn one low and away if you have to.

Giancarlo Stanton has multiple facial fractures, dental damage and laceration that required stitches.

Ugh.

Stanton gets traded in the offseason to St. Louis for Taveras and Miller. The Cubs refuse to meet the Marlins demand of Baez, Bryant, Soler, and a PTBNL that they want to turn into Schwarber.

He hits 40 HRs a season for the next 7 years and wins 2 MVP awards.

His Cardinals win the Wild Card game 5 times while he's there, but never gets to the World Series. The Cardinals always get beat by the Cubs and the Dodgers in the playoffs during that span.
