Why couldn't we have cashed in on him last year?

12 walks in 8.2 innings, three blown saves already.

I know we're not going anywhere this year and it's probably best to let him work through this to build up some trade value again, but at the same time it's painful watching him trot out there in the ninth.

Because he wasn't good last year?

I'm not one of those down on Theo/Jed, but I thought Marmol was entering a downward spiral last year, but that his 2011 wasn't so bad he would be immovable over the offseason. He is now.

Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure I thought he was immovable.

I'm not "down" on them at all; Marmol is expensive, has always had horrible mechanics and was bad last year. Moving him wasn't something I was expecting to see happen unless he rebounded.

For a decent return, yeah. I thought he could be moved for serviceable parts if a reasonable chunk of his contract were picked up.

Now he's not going anywhere.

Plus wasn't the trade market for closers horrible this year? I thought I remembered reading that teams were having a hard time moving closers for value. All the White Sox could get for Santos was Nestor Molina.

Sveum finally considering a change at closer. Names Russell and Dolis as his options.

CINCINNATI -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he's considering moving Carlos Marmol from the closer's role after Marmol's latest meltdown in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Cincinnati.

"I've definitely thought of it now," Sveum said. "I can't lie to you."

Sveum said his "only options" are James Russell and Rafael Dolis.

"That's about it really," he said, leaving out former Cubs closer Kerry Wood, who returned from the disabled list on Thursday but did not pitch. "If we do elect to go with a change, just use match-ups."

Marmol said he just couldn't throw strikes, and had no explanation for it.

"It was me," he said. "I don't make excuses."

Marmol is in the second year of a three-year, $20 million deal. As for a change in roles, Marmol said he's understand the move.

"He's the manager," he said. "He can do whatever he wants to do. I agree with that. Whatever he wants to do. I'll take the ball whenever he asks me."

Marmol threw only six strikes out of 18 pitches.

"It's the same story again," Sveum said. "Throwing 3-0 sliders (to Joey Votto) when you have three-run leads, that's just not acceptable. Nothing else can happen except a two-run homer, and nobody is on base. So we've got to somehow make some adjustments there. We've got to throw fastballs in these situations."

Sveum said he doesn't know what's ailing Marmol, except perhaps a loss in confidence. Marmol has a 6.23 earned-run average.

I would hope Wood is in consideration for the closer role. I know he just came back from the DL, but he has done it before and if he performs well he could potentially net us an ok prospect or two at the deadline. I think a trade deadline package for a good performing Kerry Wood at closer would be greater than a package for a good performing Dolis/Russell at closer package. If for no other reasons than he is Kerry Wood, has been a closer before, is a veteran, etc....

Whatever we could have gotten this past offseason, we should have taken. High effort delivery, has lost velocity - hopefully he has a good stretch ahead of the trade deadline. It only works when he has an absurd strikeout rate, and that's unsustainable.

so is he considering a change or did he announce he's making one and hasn't decided who yet?

Considering

it's now time to move past considering, and into announcing.

I agree....Right now Carlos needs to be pitching the 7th inning when trailing and then if he can't throw strikes after a batter or two Sveum can get him out. He needs to be in when he has command to build confidence. I have a feeling his performances are more mental than most.

I bet Dusty would be contemplating making Demp the closer right now.

Mariano Rivera was carted off the field Thursday after suffering an apparent injury to his right knee during batting practice.

Uh-oh. According to various reports, Rivera suffered the injury while shagging fly balls in the outfield. Witnesses say the all-time saves leader was "writhing in pain'' after the injury," though he was reportedly smiling as he was taken off on the cart. No word yet on the severity of the injury, but fantasy owners would be wise to stash away David Robertson if they can. Rivera, 42, has a 2.16 ERA, five saves and an 8/2 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings of work this season.

The Yankees aren't stupid so they won't trade for Marmol, but if they could eat the contract and spin him for... well, anything at this point, I'd be okay with that.

The Yankees have Soriano to close if Mariano misses time. And the rest of their pen has performed phenomenal so far this year. No way in hell they'd have any interest at all in Marmol.
