Obviously I'd prefer to see him get dealt for a long-term asset, but he's also earned the right to stay if he wants. I'm not going to be pissed if he stays.

i think we've heard enough in regards to his willingness to be traded if it helps the cubs and his willingness to go to atlanta that i'll be right to be upset if he doesn't go.

I understand why some would be upset, and I wouldn't necessarily blame them.

Yep, and I don't know that I'll be that "upset", but definitely disappointed.

If he shoots the deal down, how does that sit with the FO, as far as looking to re-sign him in the offseason? I wouldn't anticipate it happening.

I'm not sure it's happening anyway. Not sure why he'd want to be pitching for a rebuilding team at 36yo anyhow.

RT @TBrownYahoo Cubs knew this could be a possibility with Dempster. Remained in touch with Dodgers yesterday on Dempster and Garza.

ESPN's Jayson Stark was told by a source that the status of the Ryan Dempster-to-Atlanta deal should be resolved "shortly."

Shortly means August 20th.

These are some amazing sources of info.

I think the best we can hope for is that Dempster went to Theo and asked him to do whatever possible to get him to LA. Theo goes to LA and says that Demp prefers to go to LA if you can offer something similar to the Atlanta offer. IF LA can't then Demp will go to Atlanta.

Doubt this is the case but one can only hope.

I didn't expect it to happen but thought there was a small chance. If the Cubs were willing to offer a deal that was as good as anyone else maybe it could happen. I really don't expect the Cubs to even be in the bidding if this goes south.

Maybe it's time to get the Braves to throw a few cartons of thick onion gravy Dempster's way.

If Demp did indicate to the FO that he would accept a trade to Atlanta but then backtracked and this falls through, he'll be squarely on their [expletive] list. And mine.

My guess is that over the past week or so he became convinced he'd be going to L.A. to be with his BFF Lilly and now he having a hard time accepting another possibility.

Ok, why would the Cubs pay for a 36yo pitcher when they're rebuilding? It just doesn't seem to be a match with the way that Theo and Jed are going about all this.

A) They have the money.

B) They have a desperate need to fill 5 spots and barely any pitchers to fill them.

I don't think it happens, but Dempster would be attractive to the Cubs because he can probably be signed to a short term deal, for a fair price. Someone is going to have to throw some innings next year. If Delgado does pitch for the Cubs he will be on an innings limit, Shark will probably still be babied a little too and we've seen there isn't much to pick from in AA orr AAA right now.

He apparently wants to pitch for one at 35, so I don't think it'd be that different.

This is more for fun because I don't think Dempster is being super adversarial about his 10/5 rights, but what happens if the front office just decides to trade Garza to LA? That takes LA off the market and forces Dempster to take an Atlanta deal. He could be vindictive and reject any deal, but in the same way the front office could make him a qualifying offer in turn. That pretty much kills off his market in FA, and puts him back in the same situation next year, as a rental with 10/5 rights but a year older now. Spell that out and he'd have to take the Atlanta deal, right? Again, not actually advocating this since I don't think Dempster is trying to bully his way to LA, but it's fun to think about the leverages involved thanks to the new CBA.

I just think they'll go with a cheaper, younger option if they're just looking to eat innings. Paying Dempster a ton for one season doesn't really seem to make sense.

The only problem with that is potentially limiting the return on Garza by forcing a trade to LA.

Not to mention Garza's triceps "cramp."

Dempster chose a profession where even under the best of circumstances you can be away from your family for extended periods of time. I'm not really seeing how playing a 2 hour plane ride away from Chicago for 10 weeks is OMGZ Teh Biggezt decishuns of hiz lifes!!111

This made me chortle.

So you envision the payroll being slashed again this offseason and throwing away 2013?

Why could he be so much for LA and against Atlanta? The teams have identical nearly records(playoff prospects) etc. I just don't get it. Could he have had some type of handshake agreement with his agent for an extension in LA? Edited by Theo

Possibly, but considering the rumor was the LA was seriously in on Garza on the heels of the Dempster announcement, I figured it was close to if not the best offer they were getting.
