I feel like Bleacher Nation is jumping the shark when stuff like this is being called "interesting"

Luke poses an interesting trade question over at the Message Board – how much would it take to get Starlin Castro, Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, and a full-paid-for Alfonso Soriano?

Not crazy about the minor league guy Brett added.

Is Bleacher Bum or old friend in Williston ND?

That's the usertext/title thing, not anyone's username.

Law on ESPN Radio right now, tells people to seriously tone down their expectations for the type of prospects you can get in deadline deals because of the new CBA. Doesn't expect any impact prospects to move.

I think you definitely would still see impact prospects move for someone like Garza (or the Cubs wouldn't move him) - it seemed like he was mainly talking about rental players like Dempster, wouldn't you agree?

Did that many teams really consider draft pick compensation when acquiring guys at midseason?

Every team, except the Cubs, probably considered it, but it didn't shape the trade market.

I honestly don't know. Nothing would surprise me between now and the deadline.

The team acquiring Dempster wouldn't receive any compensation for him at the end of the season, under the new CBA. That said, a team looking to extend Dempster could still give us a very solid return. It's a sellers market, due to the extra wildcard and the amount of teams likely to still be in it.

Very true. And that's pretty much what Goldstein said a little bit ago. He said he could see the Cubs getting a top 10 organizational guy for Dempster, which would obviously be great.

As in top 10 in the organization. Can't tell whether that would mean our organization or the trading one, but I'd guess the latter.

Which would be good, unless they're trading him to the White Sox.

It really makes sense to deal Dempster as early as possible. Right now, his closest competition for best starter on the market is Wandy. If a team is willing to give us a solid return now, I hope we take it quick, before Greinke, Hamels, McCarthy or someone else is put out there.

Couldn't tell if he meant top 10 prospect or some subset of prospects within each organization, that everybody refers to as organizational players.

If the Cubs can't get a potential impact prospect for Dempster, I'd rather keep him and try to get the draft pick. I think Dempster would be ok with turning down 1 year at 12.5 if he stays anywhere close to his production so far this year, and if he sees 2013 might be rough for the Cubs. There will be significantly fewer comp picks in the 2013 draft, so it's possible Dempster could net something between picks 35-40, which would have been good enough for McCullers or a number of other potential impact prospects this year. Add in the fact that the Cubs should have one of the top 3 draft budgets available next year and they would be in great position to add an impact guy for him.

Not quite that easy. Remember, there will be two separate 6 pick lotteries involving supplemental picks involving small market teams. Plus, a team still has to be willing to LOSE their own 1st rounder, in order to sign Demp. At his age, I have more than a few doubts that a team is willing to do that.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of wanting to see the Brewers win.

I thought teams didn't forfeit a pick by signing free agents anymore. Well, you are right that does change things. Too bad, I thought I was smart. I guess our best bet is to hope Theo can pull off this years version of Wheeler for Beltran...on a smaller scale.

I think it's any team outside the bottom 10 instead of 15 now. The thing I'm not sure about is how many guys a team is allowed to sign now, or if there even is a limit.

Yeah, it's an awkward thing to describe succinctly, but: a guy who would fall in the top 10 of his own organization's top 10 prospect ranking. Obviously it depends on the system (a lot), but it's just a short-hand way of saying a potentially very good prospect, but one who is definitely not in the top 100 overall.

With the new CBA If Dempster fetches anything close to a top 10 prospect, I will be ecstatic.

They could not have fucked up these new draft rules any more if they wanted to.

I truly believe if we had not had the new rules in place, we would have spent 30 mill on the draft this year. Every single round would have been BPA, hard to sign guys.
