Edes is saying it's Bowden, a PTBNL, and the Cubs are covering most of Byrds salary.

If that's it, I'd just as soon have held on til closer to the deadline.

I will never understand sentiment like this. Why the [expletive] is he a "bum?" He was signed to a very team-friendly deal, always seemed like a good guy and unfortunately it looks like injury and age might have caught up to him, yet we've got meatballs like this acting like they got rid of some kind of horrible burden on the team.

Looks like it's Bowden and a PTBNL. Awesome news, since we'll now have something hanging over their heads now. I hope it's from a group of upside guys anyway.

It's nothing really personal, he's just a bad baseball player now.

Since when?

He was awesome right after he got back from the beaning. It wasn't until later in the season that he wore down... which wasn't surprising, considering that the doctors hadn't let him do any conditioning for weeks after the injury.

He's off to a slow start in 13 games. That's not nearly the same as being a bad baseball player. He's still the same average to slightly above-average player he always was.

More like we only got a 25 year old failing prospect for an all-star with a respectable contract?

It's have been nice to get more for Byrd, but he's off to an abysmal start and in the final year of his contract and has no real value beyond that because of the new CBA.

I would have waited to see if he could boost his value a bit, but there wasn't going to be a great return for him regardless. I think he should have been traded last year, but that's water under the bridge.

the deal is fine. guys like marlon byrd just aren't fetching much in the trade market these days. carlos pena was fine last year, and they apparently couldn't get more than a turd in a wet paper bag for him. byrd's power numbers have declined the last 2 years, his overall numbers last year weren't very good (yeah you can say he tired in september, but the other GM is just going to say that a CF with an OPS barely above .700 isn't worth much), and he's off to a wretched start this year, which will make it harder for him to have respectably good numbers by the trade deadline. better to give the playing time to someone like campana or sappelt and try to find out what you have there, than hope that byrd turns it around and can fetch a marginally better prospect or a few hundred grand extra in salary savings.

Who the hell was arguing for that besides WSR?

rob was saying he wished we'd held onto him until closer to the deadline; you seem dissatisfied with the trade for reasons that aren't completely clear.

I have no problem with the trade; I'm just baffled by people who rag on a player like Byrd on the way out the door, doing things like calling him "a bum." Nobody can pretend like he's been anything other than awful this season, but I don't understand the meatballish tendency to trash a player like that.

I love how you have taken this one word phrase I have used to describe Byrds current play(like Marlon Byrd actively posts here and will read this) and ran with it. Maybe you should offer up an orginal baseball opinion of your own for once instead of contantly going after everyone with your sanctimonious attitude.
