There is a sizable portion of Cub fans that do not reside in Chicago and couldn't care less if the home games are in Wrigleyville or Addison or Schaumburg. I agree that Wrigley is a part of the experience, but the moment that becomes on hindrance, move on if it means a better chance at a WS and a more level playing field.

Are the fans who would revolt that different that the ones who are upset about ads, jumbotron or whatever else?

Maybe I'm in the minority here -- I don't care that much about ads but would be sick if the Cubs left Wrigley.

Then might I suggest that you aren't a fan of the franchise as much as you are a fan of the stadium. Take a picture, bring it home, hang it on your wall if the park is that important to you. Winning baseball matters to me and if other franchises have an advantage because they don't play in Wrigley, something is wrong and needs to be addressed.

I'm sure Rahm will step in and tell Tunney to go [expletive] himself soon enough.

This. Tunney is a gnat in a thunderstorm right now. The city wants the Cubs to stay and maximize the revenue for both sides without the city paying for it, and the path to that resolution is obvious right now. Tunney doesn't even count as a roadblock; he's just bitching because he can right now.

While I agree, relying on Chicago politicians for anything is risky at best.

I didn't say I wanted them to stay at all costs, but all else equal, Wrigley is very important to me.

ETA: I'll also reiterate my point that, at this juncture, Wrigley is a pretty essential component of the franchise. Just like if the Cubs were to move to Rockford and change their name to the Pandas, it would feel weird, even though the Rockford Pandas are the same franchise. Would a Cubs WS won at a Schaumberg stadium taint my happiness? Of course not. But my season ticket holder status is over if won't be able to jump on the train and see my favorite team every night after work.

Brett's recap of the madness.

I've mentioned this point before, but this is just my favorite:

Ald. Thomas Tunney, 44th, said Thursday that he would not sign off on a deal unless it included more parking, better police protection and “aesthetic” assurances sought by Wrigleyville residents and businesses — all issues that have yet to be settled.

Tunney, the man whose plan is to put billboards and huge video screens on residential buildings, is worried about the "aesthetics" of the renovation.

It's amusing how flimsy the pretense is. The aesthetics only seem to matter when disturbed inside the park, an area that remains largely unseen from the neighborhood.

He may as well come out and say "I'm grasping at straws because those whom I represent are terrified at the prospect of being kicked off of the gravy train". They're all hypocritical parasites and I hope they get well and truly shafted.

That's pretty pointless hyperbole; the Cubs are a huge moneymaker for the city and this has to get done to keep that going and, ultimately, make even more money. Tunney has next to no influence/power when it comes to getting this accomplished.

I still have no clue what an alderman does.

He alders

Dammit I was gonna make that joke this morning but was too lazy.

So why haven't they told him to [expletive] off yet?

Push has not yet turned to shove.

Because there's no need to and that's not how these things are handled. He knows his role and he knows he's going to squashed and he's trying to make as much noise in the meantime so it looks like he's doing something. The Cubs and the city will do what they need to do regardless of Tunney.

It never will. He's posturing so that it can look like the city will "give" him something; my guess is it will be centered around an agreement to fix up the Sheridan L stop, something the city already needs to do and probably would have done in the relatively near future anyway.

Exactly, he has to come out of this looking like all his pissing and moaning gets something for the neighborhood even though at the end of the day, it's about the cash cow that is the Cubs staying exactly where they are and making more money than they are now. If he knows what's good for him, and as long as he's been around, he probably does, he'll shut his mouth and take whatever the city gives him and then pat himself on the back for it (or have Rahm do it for him).

I haven't taken it in awhile, but I thought the Sheridan L stop was just fixed in the past year.

I think it received some extended maintenance, but nothing compared to the overhaul that some of the other Red Line stops have gotten in the past year or so; it's still pretty much a dump. Plus I thought I saw something about Tunney and co. wanting it "expanded," so maybe they want it to become a Purple Line stop as well? Not quite sure about that last part.

I think they should just let a live bear wander around the bleachers.
