I believe pitchcs has some interesting theories.

[expletive] the Ricketts family. They couldn't have handled this entire process any worse and the fans and players are the ones paying for it. I honestly hope the [expletive] it all up, don't get anything approved, and have to sell the team. They have literally done nothing right since taking ownership besides hiring Theo, but the even [expletive] that up by basically neutering him with a lack of payroll/investment. There has been nothing on or off the field that has gone well unless you count moving up in the mythical prospect rankings that ultimately could end up meaning nothing. They pissed away a ton of money in the Dominican Republic just in time to be boned by international spending limits. The radio booth is a disaster. Obviously the major league team is complete garbage. I'm sure the new Spring Training stadium will suck dick also just because they hate doing things correctly. In a previously unfathomable point of view, I'd rather have the Tribune back. At least they had the sense to bring in McDonough and play up the nostalgia garbage correctly. [expletive] this whole situation.

I get the desire to list everything they've Fd up but, the radio booth?

I honestly hope your hope never comes true because that is going to lead to a good decade or more of continued crappiness.

You say that like everything's not on that path already. If they basically do nothing this offseason, the Wrigley renovation won't be complete until the 2018 season (if they are able to start next year). If the team isn't any good at that point, the whole thing will be a failure anyway. The absolute worst case scenario is that the farm system doesn't turn out quite as good as we all hope, they STILL don't spend money, and the stadium renovations is that they don't start until 2022 when that stupid rooftop contract expires, potentially ending the worst decade in a terrible franchise's history. Awesome.

lol these two posts. what the [expletive] [expletive]?

http://www.suntimes.com/24312612-761/city-councils-votes-pressure-cubs-to-start-swinging-on-wrigley-construction.html

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday pressured the Cubs to start renovating Wrigley Field after delivering a punch list of concessions to tie up loose ends on the $500 million project.

“They need to get started — and I was clear and unambiguous with the ownership about that even prior to [Wednesday’s] City Council actions,” the mayor said.

“The city has lived up to everything they said they were going to do in a timely fashion….We’re holding up our side and I expect them and the other invested interests — meaning also the rooftops — to resolve their issues so the whole city can benefit.”

Local Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) agreed that the “ideas every month” that have come from the billionaire family that owns the Cubs “exhausted the patience” of the City Council.

“I would emphasize that the Cubs need to start the work as soon as possible…They need to do the renovation to be at Wrigley Field, to be in Chicago and to be in a LakeView, which has been phenomenally supportive,” Tunney said.

The dispute has come down to two rooftop owners whose Sheffield views would be impaired by the right field sign. The Cubs have explored the possibility of reducing the team’s 17 percent share or buying the rooftops out, to no avail, sources said.

“We agree with the mayor and we’re anxious to move forward. We appreciate the tremendous amount of energy from the city, Ald. Tunney and the community that it has taken to get us to this point. We want to get started and we’re looking forward to resolving the issues that remain so we can do so quickly,” said Cubs Vice-President and General Counsel Mike Lufrano.

The City Council [took]... a series of votes that:

◆ Vacate up to 25 feet of street and sidewalk on Waveland and Sheffield without any additional compensation to Chicago taxpayers beyond the $3.75 million over 10 years already promised for neighborhood improvements and the $1 million pledged to build a new park on School Street.

The expanded Wrigley footprint will accommodate wider aisles, more concessions, a larger Budweiser deck and giant caissons needed to support the two outfield signs. The Cubs are offering free parking in team lots on non-game days to residents whose 58 street spaces will be lost.

◆ Authorize the Cubs to put up an advertising-filled “branding arch” over Clark Street in lieu of a pedestrian bridge nixed at Tunney’s behest.

◆ Give the team the green-light to schedule 35 night games-per-season at Wrigley — and add eight more, including three Saturday nights, to accommodate national television — in exchange for added security and free remote parking for up to 1,000 cars.

◆ Waive the requirement for City Council approval of individual signs inside and outside the ballpark already included in a “sign matrix” approved by the Plan Commission and the Commission on Historical Landmarks.

The only outstanding item on the Cubs’ wish-list is the stalled plan to allow the team to sell beer and wine from kiosks at an open-air plaza adjacent to a renovated Wrigley and allow fans with plastic cups to carry their drinks between the ballpark and the plaza.

Tunney has promised changes after community feedback on a “sports venue license” ordinance that, as currently written, would authorize year-round liquor sales — from 11 a.m. each day to up to 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends — on a plaza that would also feature live music.

Wrigleyville residents are concerned about loud music. They would prefer a quieter form of activity, such as farmer’s markets or a skating rink.

So the hold up is the rooftop owners now? Great.

Now?

It pretty much has been the whole time, the rubber stamping of these revisions aside.

I admittedly haven't been paying attention for a while. The last time I really delved deep into the proceedings Tunney was being an [expletive] about everything.

WE AGREED TO LET YOU SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY ON YOUR OWN BUSINESS, WHY AREN'T YOU DOING IT YET, A-HOLES

Because they don't actually have any of their own money.

Shhh!

Just let the rooftops sue. Unless the Cubs think the rooftops can get an injunction (seems unlikely), they should be able to tie up the litigation in courts until the contracts run out.

While Emanuel is spurring #Cubs to start Wrigley work, sources tell me the city is also applying pressure on rooftop owners to back down.

I missed this 5 days ago, but Brett just posted a blog entry with the link.

To try to get things finished, Mr. Emanuel has dispatched his City Council floor leader, the mild-mannered Ald. Pat O'Connor, 40th, to engage in some shuttle diplomacy between the parties. There's no deal yet, but at least they're talking. And there have been some direct conversations between Mr. Ricketts and some of the rooftop owners.

I'm told that a long-term deal — extending the current revenue-sharing agreement between the team and the rooftops beyond the current 2023 expiration date — is not on the table. Perhaps understandably, team ownership is not interested. It wants this over once and for all.

That means something else has to break the deadlock.

I don't know if it's physically possible to build a Jumbotron and the other right field stuff without blocking someone's views. But sending some money likely would help ease the pain. So would the Cubs buying out some of the rooftops, something that's been discussed on and off for a while.

only in America can a group of freeloaders steal and then have the balls to ask for what amounts to protection money to make them go away. The Cubs never should have signed an agreement with them.

Ok not only in America. No less frustrating.

I think some families in Sicily might take issue with this statement...

Why doesn't Ricketts start on the rest of the project and at least get started on something?

Assuming you are talking about the Wrigley renovation, because the aspects of the project that are at issue are the ones that will be paying for much of the project.

It's going to take multiple questions at the convention, if we're to get any light shed on his lack of funds and the debt structure. The first answer will surely be some semblance of a canned, rehearsed, stock answer. Then someone needs to bring up things in detail and ask for a more pointed answer, since there are definitely glaring warning signs out there.
