Don't love the full NTC, but good move for the Cardinals.

At two years, I don't think the NTC is a big deal. It's a pretty solid move, provided Carlos doesn't fall apart as he is prone to do.

He wont, his hitting coach has some stuff.

I think I'm going to be very curious how long they stick with the idea of giving Beltran looks in CF when Craig gets back. I'm not sure I buy Beltran playing Cf.

All that said, good move on their part, and keeps their short term window, with Berkman/Carpenter, open a bit.

Okay, that's a hell of a deal for the Cards.

Wish we'd been able to move Soriano and get in on that.

Wouldn't have had a problem with him in RF for us and Jackson in Center... but I am not overly disappointed we didn't make a run at him with his age and injury history. However, current state of Card's, not a bad move, they did wonders with Berkman last year on a similar deal.

Curious as to what their future plans hold though. They may have a better farm system than we do but they might not be too far away from looking worse than we do now.

What does this even mean?

I'm not sure he could tell you. I think what he's saying is that while the Cards have a decent farm system, they're not particularly well set up for the long term.

And there is some truth to that, I think.

The Cardinals could win 95-100 games next year if they all stay healthy, and they could win 75-80 if a bunch of them don't. I don't know if there's a team that's harder to nail down because of how much uncertainty they have with post-prime and injury prone players.

Berkman and Beltran will make or break next year's team. If Beltran misses 60 games and Berkman reverts to his 2010 form, things could get ugly. Holliday has some uncertainty about him too.

I'm pretty confident that Wainwright will come back strong, but Carpenter is a question mark as well.

But if most or even half of those things break right, they'll be pretty good.

So, 2 of the 3 best position players will make or break them. Whoah. Don't go too far out on that limb.

And Holliday has been worth 5+ WAR for 5 straight years. There's pretty much no uncertainty with him.

They have a top 10 farm system and no contracts that look to be albatrosses. 55 mil in guaranteed money in 2013, 25 in 2014 and 26 in 2015. A good system and a lot of money is pretty much exactly how you'd want to be set up for the long term, isn't it?

Of course you can say that two of the best position players will make or break any team. But those two in your case have had extreme variances in performance and health in recent years, so that either/or dynamic is more pronounced.
