holliday was worth 5+ wins last year despite missing 1/4 of the season? without looking it up i'm going to guess that his baserunning/defense WAR was overly optimistic.

Nope. Fielding was his worst of his last 5 years and his baserunning was right in the middle of his last 5 years. He had a .393 wOBA. He's sneaky great.

I'm not sure he could tell you. I think what he's saying is that while the Cards have a decent farm system, they're not particularly well set up for the long term.

And there is some truth to that, I think.

They have a top 10 farm system and no contracts that look to be albatrosses. 55 mil in guaranteed money in 2013, 25 in 2014 and 26 in 2015. A good system and a lot of money is pretty much exactly how you'd want to be set up for the long term, isn't it?

Who has the Cardinals system ranked in the top 10? Serious question, because BA had you guys ranked 24th last year.

Some, not much. Like 130 or 160 games kind of uncertainty.

Why is that?

Because he has missed 20 games or more two of the last four seasons?

Seems kind of absurd to roundaboutly label a guy injury prone because of a pulled hamstring 4 years ago. Stretching it with the 4 years thing.

Yeah, I thought going into last year the Cards had a pretty crappily rated system. Did they have a bunch of guys take big leaps coupled with a great draft?

the cards are really top 10? off the top of my head i can't see them being ahead of tampa, toronto, kansas city, texas, oakland, atlanta, pittsburgh and san diego. that's 8 and there are others that are probably better.

Lists aren't out yet, but I'd just about guarantee a top 10 this year. Good chance they have 5 guys in BA's top 100 in Miller, Martinez, Wong, Taveras and Cox.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right at all.

That's a huge leap. You really think they jumped 15+ spots in the rankings in a single season?

Pretty much. Martinez, Jenkins and Taveras exploded. Matt Adams didn't slow down. Wong and Cox will be top 100. Lots of pitching depth and big time upside in the system.

if zack cox is a top 100 prospect then there really are not enough good prospects in baseball.

He was #62 last year.

what can i say, i'm not really wowed by a sub 800 ops in a hitter's league.

Not enough power for a corner guy, imo.

Vitters is guy whose power we've been waiting on and he slugged better in a pitcher's league.

I'm not very high on Cox, but .306 .363 .434 .797 isn't too bad for a first year of pro ball with most of it spent at AA. Been rumors of him being moved to 2b since he was drafted. If he could do that respectably, he'd have some good value.

Right now, I'd say they are top 10. BA likes Cox a lot more than most, but even if you take him out, Jenkins should be in there.

I think I'm going to be very curious how long they stick with the idea of giving Beltran looks in CF when Craig gets back. I'm not sure I buy Beltran playing Cf.

All that said, good move on their part, and keeps their short term window, with Berkman/Carpenter, open a bit.

Curious as to what their future plans hold though. They may have a better farm system than we do but they might not be too far away from looking worse than we do now.

What does this even mean?

Basically their current team has a lot of 35 an older guys and the younger guys seem more like role players than anything else with the possible exception of Garcia. I really dont see Freese, Craig, and Jay as guys that are going to take the team into the future. They have a good farm system but it's far from the type you look at and say who cares how old our current roster there are a lot of guys that will be gone by the time we hope to compete again. Then again, like the Twins, you can never count them out long term no matter how many top players they lose so who knows.

I predict this move will push the Cards ahead of the Cubs next year. =D>

Are you being facetious? Cardinals may be old and just lost their top player, but I really don't think that The Cubs are a threat to anyone whose main goal for next season isn't a top 3 draft pick for 2013.

Fixed, since you didn't get the sarcasm.

For those too young to remember, the 2004/2005 off-season featured a Carlos Beltran free-agency that created a lot of buzz on this board. Beltran had let it be known that he wanted to come here, Hendry didn't want to spend that kind of money or commit to that length of contract. So let's recap. Beltran was paid 7/119 and 2/26 for a total of 9/145. When his conract is done, we will still have Soriano for 1/18(?) and will end up paying 8/136. Beltran is two years younger.

The scuttlebutt is that Hendry didn't have the money available to him to land Beltran; he wanted to add him and made an offer, but the Tribune limited the dollars.
