Why wouldn't the Rays just keep Rizzo, since they have a big hole at 1B?

they'll have no choice but to move him when they hear that davearm is willing to give up barney to get him and a slightly bad contract that ends after this season.

Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune thinks Anthony Rizzo will be traded "in the next week or two." He predicts Rizzo will be sent to the Rays, who will then flip Rizzo to the Cubs, where he is "still coveted" by (former Padres executives) Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod.

In the same article:

Center thinks the Padres "desperately" need to acquire a close-to-Major League-ready middle infield prospect.

Which gets me back to the deal I mentioned earler:

Rizzo + Hudson for Marmol + Barney + $2million (2012) + $4million (2013).

Cubs get their 1B, Padres get their young MI, Padres get a good trade chip (Marmol) with a very trade-friendly contract to pick up more prospects.

Other than being younger, whats the difference between Rizzo and LaHair? Is Rizzo really supposed to be that good?

lahair, age 21: .795 ops at A- and A

rizzo, age 21: 1.056 ops at AAA

lahair didn't put up a season at aaa as good as rizzo's until he got to his SIXTH SEASON there.

rizzo may not be a star, but lahair is organizational fodder.

The age difference is a big deal, but I think Rizzo is closer to a future .800 OPS guy than a future .900 OPS guy.

I hope leadership doesn't develop an unnatural fixation on him.

Quit dicking around and sign Fielder.

$170/7 with an opt-out after year 4.

rizzo had cancer, that and the age thing are pretty much the only differences between them.

I'm going to need you to stay after class and write Darwin Barney has no trade value on the board 100 times.

Maybe Marmol and Junior Lake for Rizzo could be taken seriously, but even then you can forget about the Padres throwing in any extra players.

That's absurd. I may be the single biggest Lake supporter on this board, but I'd flip him in a heartbeat to acquire Darwin Barney. (if we didn't already have him, obviously)

Barney is a proven league-average 2B who makes absolutely nothing and is under control for 5 more years. If that description sounds kinda familiar, it's pretty close to the one people are using to describe why Theo wanted Travis Wood so badly. There are plenty of GMs that would love to have him.

7/25?

No. Thanks.

He's not opting out of that. Are you Scott Boras? lol

One season is not exactly proven. He has no power and he doesn't walk and while hes great defensively he's not at the Vizquel or Ozzie Smith level that it could carry his career, although in offensively focused day and age I have to wonder if even Ozzie would be as appreciated as he was 20 some years ago.

Look, Barney is a guy with a pretty good chance to have a long average career probably back and forth between starting and backup depending where he lands. Lake on the other hand has the potential to be much better, but could also be junk. Seems like that's Theos type of thing. Remember, we traded Colvin and LeMahieu, 2 guys with a pretty good chance at being average for 2 guys that could be far better but could be junk. In fact this entire thread is about acquiring a guy who could be out 1st baseman of the future but could be junk.

yeah barney's second half of .238/.286/.328/.613 last year would suggest that he's far from "proven league average." to be league average he's going to have to be one of the best defensive 2b in baseball. and maybe he is, but ideally you would upgrade from him rather than settle for his anemic bat.

Fortunately for him, the first half counted, too.

The NL average 2b only hit .258 .319 .380 last year, so it's not like he has a huge hurdle to overcome.

Colvin was never going to be average. Colvin was and is terrible. His minor league record suggests that he's a 250/280/420 type hitter in the big leagues, and that's what he's been in the big leagues.

LeMahieu I think has a chance to be average, but a lot depends on how his defense plays at 2b.

Feels like people, including myself, are having a hard time looking at offensive numbers now that they're down a bit from what we've been used to. It's part of why I'd rather just look at WAR nowadays (well, that, and the fact that WAR is comprehensive and why wouldn't I want more information in a nicely wrapped up package).

I usually gloss over WSR's posts, but holy [expletive]. Colvin with a pretty good shot to be average? FFS.

As a 4th/platoon outfielder, he has a decent chance to be decent.

An average bad major leaguer?

Not even.

Harold Reynolds has a serious man-crush on Tyler Colvin and got on the Cubs last year for not playing him enough. that pretty much confirms he sucks.

I have no idea why he was rushed to the bigs. If he was given more time and if he was in the right organization he might have been decent.

He was rushed? He had well over 1000 PA in AA over the course of 3 seasons, and that was with 3 seasons worth of major college baseball. He was 24 when he got his first call-up and he tore the cover off the ball the following spring. I hardly think he was rushed. Half his value was in the fact that he was fairly polished and a guy who was likely to make the majors (as opposed to a guy with upside to do well in the majors). I agree he may have had a better chance in a better organization, but better organizations wouldn't have drafted him where the Cubs did.
