Heres MLBTRs full list of non tender candidates. Again, Volstad would be my top target here. Pete Moylan, Manny Parra, and JP Howell are also possibilities. Maybe Keppinger as an upgrade over Barney. I'd also have interest in Luke Scott. Our racist media and fans would love him.

Surprisingly, Blake DeWitt doesn't make the list.

With the current 1B, OF, and bench situation, Barton should be signed pretty much immediately if he's non-tendered.

If we dont sign Prince I wouldnt mind adding Loney or Barton. Theo should be on a five year plan not an immediate two year plan. Signing one of those two as opposed to a stopgap veteran could allow one to develop and become a part of the five year plan.

Ive always thought Loney would be a good fit for Wrigley with the short alleys. He also has a ridiculous away statline. It is something like .300/.360/.480. Not great but reason for optimism.

James Loney sucks and is 2 days older than Prince.
I certainly do not prefer Loney to Fielder, I said if we don't or can't sign Fielder.

That being said it wouldnt surprise me if by year five or six of a possible Fielder contract that Loney would be more productive. Loney very well could be a Mark Grace type player for us. Almost identical, actually and thats with no more development. Hes not a difference maker or anything, but is pretty useful.

his home/away splits have been rather equal the last couple of years and not good. I do not see that much upside in Loney.

I'm going to have to call shenanigans on this nonsense. Loney is not Mark Grace. I'm no huge Grace fan, but he was much better than Loney.

Loney is worse than Grace in just about every way possible. (On the field that is, I'm sure he's a less loathsome individual) I'd also say the ship has sailed on his development. He'll be 28 in May, expecting him to become something else is a long shot. I wouldn't be surprised if he was out of baseball by year 6 of Fielder's contract.

Either way we are much better off signing a guy who has some upside than a decent veteran, even if the division is down. It doesnt matter if you think that guy is Loney, Barton or someone else. Im certainly not saying Loney would be dream or anything.

Brett brings up a very good point today at BN about Morales: If he's going to be dealt, it could happen today, since they said they "expect to tender him a contract". Not that they will tender him one. I don't buy them playing Trumbo at 3B and Morales DHing personally.

This could be Theo's shot at finding another Ortiz, if he's healthy. Plus, if you have him for 3 mill or whatever his salary will be, it certainly leaves you all kinds of flexibility to sign Cespedes and Darvish as well, or other bigger type moves. I doubt he'd cost a bunch in trade either, so if he's healthy, this wouldn't be something I'm opposed to at all.

I'm holding out for Dimitri Young. He's coming back after losing 70 pounds. I would assume he would be cheap and wouldn't demand 8-10 years. :yahoo:

I would rather gamble on LaHair. I agree with your sentiment though, I just do not agree with Loney.
