Pretty crazy that there's a chance Fielder may end up with a contract half the number of years in length as Pujols. Pujols is obviously the better player, but considering the 4-year age difference, the respective talents of their agents, and the fact that Pujols's deal came first--seemingly setting the market for Fielder--I feel like Prince has to be one disappointed man right about now.

Albert Pujols sets no market. He's the greatest player in baseball and no one compares to him, no matter how hard Scott Boras will try. The only other contract/player that can compare is Rodriguez and that's already done, and was likely used to get Pujols his contract. Pujols' deal sets no precedence for any other player.

If Boras wants to start using other contracts to get his client the best deal, he should be looking at Howard or Teixeira, not Pujols

It really doesn't take much to get 1,800 followers on Twitter, does it. I wonder if he's some strange performance artist or something.

The Nats just gave Morse a new contract. Not sure why they'd do that if they were still in on Fielder.

Morse plays outfield as well, which is where he'd be anyway. LaRoche is the one they'd want to move if they sign Fielder, but he only has 1 year left at 8 mil, so even if they can't move him, he's not going to stop them signing him if that's the plan. If anything, LaRoche would just be another fish in the water making it more difficult for Lee and Kotchman to find even a decent 1 year deal. This being said, while I have 0 interest in LaRoche, if it drives Kotchman down to a 1/5-7 mil I'd be interested.

If the Nationals get Fielder, the Cubs are starting 0-3. YES!

I'd take that bet.

Even with Prince Fielder, there would be plenty of teams better than the Nats. Does this mean we'll lose every game to those teams too?

Im going to say 1-2.

According to MASN's Jen Royle, Orioles management has been trying to lure money out of owner Peter Angelos for a run at free agent first baseman Prince Fielder.

Royle says Orioles manager Buck Showalter met with Angelos late last week and flat-out "asked for money." It's not known how Angelos responded. Fielder's market is beginning to pick up with the countdown to spring training reaching less than 30 days. The 27-year-old slugger owns a .929 career OPS and batted .299/.415/.566 with 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games last season for the Brewers. He's also drawing interest from the Nationals, Rangers and Dodgers.

Hard to imagine any top FA with solid alternative offers choosing to spend the balance of his career with the O's.

The Orioles could offer him more years and money than any of those other teams. Texas has already said they aren't interested. Even if that's just a leverage ploy it still probably means that they don't want to give him more than 5 years. How can the Dodgers pay him with the ownership issues they're having. The Nats just gave Morse a new contract meaning they are in the same boat as Texas- either genuinely not interested or not willing to pay.

A team like the Orioles really needs a big splash. It would be worth it to overpay Fielder. They've got to give their fans a reason to believe and right now they are staying away in droves. They're in danger of becoming the AL version of the Pirates.

The Dodgers' bids were due today, at least loosely. They'll know the winner in very early February. All it takes at that point is for McCourt to get permission from the future owner(who does NOT have to be approved by MLB because it's a BK sale) and he can bid whatever they want him to. This thing has drug out this long already, it'd kind of be silly for Boras not to wait and see how this plays out now.

I think it's clear Boras/Fielder are grasping at straws and waited out the Darvish/Rangers negotiations to see if they fell through and now are trying to wait out/encourage MLB/McCourt/Dodgers/Dodgers new owner to give him the big deal. I am surprised there have been no reports on the Brewers trying to get creative to bring him back on a 1 or 2 year deal for large aav, or for them to offer him a long term deal with lots of opt outs or even ownership clauses. If they can bring back Fielder they would be right at the top of the division again. Without him, I think the Reds and Cardinals are better than them.

The Brewers are way over projected budget. Unless Prince wants to play for peanuts and high-fives, I don't think he will be back. Plus, Boras/Fielder aren't grasping at straws, they are just waiting to see what happens. I think Texas and Darvish played a role, but Texas isn't out of it. At this point, it is about creativity. Fielder wants to win, so he is probably willing to see how creative the Rangers can get before signing with the Nationals or us, which is a huge long shot.

Didn't the Brewers get stuck with a reliever that unexpectedly accepted arby to the tune of ~$10 mill.?

Did the Brewers even make an offer to Fielder?

K-Rod accepted arby, think they settled on a deal around $7m. The Brewers reportedly offered a long term deal to Prince sometime around the end of the regular season/during the playoffs that he didn't take to seriously and declined but it was for at least 5 years for over $100m, iirc. Think I remember reading it on a brewers message board (brewerfan.net).

Edit: They officially made that offer two springs ago (oops), but I do remember there were rumblings that the Brewers were trying to sign him to an extension during/towards the end of last season and it was at least in the neighborhood of that offer.
