It'd be hilarious if we signed him down now. Actually, in some respects, it might even be smart. Won't happen, but a signed Fielder allows us to potentially sell Rizzo off for assets that they may value more than Cashner.

Tis nice knowing ya, 43 page Fielder thread.

So, has Washington signed him yet , leaving Theo to knee-jerk into trading away Garza for 3 mid level guys from Oakland?

Is this supposed to be green font because I can never tell these days.

it's as real as you want it to be, buddy.

The acquisition of Anthony Rizzo changes nothing for the Cubs and their pursuit of Prince Fielder. Olney calls it an "apples and oranges" situation given the price tag of the two players. The Cubs' brass has been acting with zero urgency in talks with Fielder, and they've always been leery about giving him a long-term deal.

Can't quite tell if he's saying that there's still the chance of going after Fielder or if there never was a legit pursuit.

Or if Boras is pleading with Olney to say mornings changed? We've moved on from Prince, Rizzo is our guy now.

From every other move Theo has made (before Rizzo), I don't believe we were ever really "in" on Fielder. Maybe if he would've accepted a 3-year contract, Theo might have gone for it.

Would it be such a terrible idea for Fielder to sign a one year deal with someone? If he doesn't like any of the deals available, would he really hurt himself that much by signing a short term deal to see who needs a first baseman next season? He'd be all but assured of finishing the season with a contender since whoever signed him would certainly be able to trade him at the deadline if they fell out of the race. Maybe by then a team that can't afford him now frees up enough payroll or has an injury.

It would be a tremendous risk.

what would be the point of fielder doing this? he's going to get paid this offseason.

Not saying I agree with B77, but who might need a 1B next season?

Who needs a 1st baseman now that he actually wants to play for that has the money and is willing to give him more than 5 years? A lot can change in a single season.

What if his best offer is 5/ 110 million from a team like the Orioles? He probably takes that but who can say for sure. FAs don't exactly line up to sign with the O's.

It would be risky but if a team with money got involved in the bidding it could pay off big time. For example, the Dodgers new owners might feel he's the last piece to the puzzle.

That's not a very attractive list. I think that is part of the reason why people were upset that Epstein was passing on Fielder (that is until we got Rizzo).

So by all accounts it sounds as if Fielders options are possibly down to just Wash and FLA..albeit with others on the outskirts just in case

The Marlins? I'd love that. It'd probably take them out of the race for the Cubans.

It's moot at this point, but I don't think there's a huge difference between Fielder and Napoli, besides age.

I can't help but think there's more to this than just the Nats and Marlins. Granted, I didn't even think the Marlins were involved at all, but I have a feeling this is getting delayed because the Dodgers bids are due within the next 10 days or so. If McCourt got permission from the highest bidder to go ahead and sign Fielder, I bet he'd do it. Boras lives in LA, has Dodger season tickets and certainly would benefit from having Fielder's marketing possibilities there. Kemp is one of Fielder's best friends, Magic Johnson has said he wishes this offseason had happened a tad later than it did and there are some other really heavy hitters in on their sale as well, because they've got their TV deal starting next year or the year after. Something tells me Boras is holding off on everything with Fielder to see if this can become a reality. It's too close at this point, not to.

The Cubs are not totally out on Fielder, Stark reports. If agent Scott Boras needs a deal somewhere, the Cubs would be open to an agreement on their own terms.

And just when I'd fully accepted that it wasn't a possibility.

I think we can pencil in the Astros then.

All along,Rangers and Cubs have been lying in the weeds for Fielder, making it clear they would be interested if price fell to their range.

@Buster_ESPN One exec believes WAS, TEX, CHC may get this Fielder contract structure: 6 years, opt-out after 3 years, 22-24m a year.

How generous of him to "lower" his price to that.

Why do they call it an opt out instead of just saying it's a 3 year deal with a player option for 3 more? Is there a difference in practice?
