There you go again, making everything black and white.

Boras is obviously very aggressive in seeking top value for his clients, but he doesn't treat the GMs he's negotiating with like complete morons.

There was an article a while back, I can't remember exactly what website it was on... but it detailed the dossiers that Boras creates for his clients. He makes these absurd, aggrandizing claims about players where he forecasts what they're on pace to do... even if it's an absurdly long ways away. If memory serves, there's a point in Prince Fielder's dossier pointed out what elite company he'll be in when he keeps up this pace through his age 37 season. The whole thing is kinda a running joke for most front offices in baseball, as most guys aren't dumb enough to buy into any of it. Yet Boras still distributes these dossiers every year... you know why?

It works. It works mostly because owners aren't as smart as the front offices they employ, and the George Steinbrenners of the world love to go over their GMs heads when they see a shiny new toy. Boras will do everything he can to make the sale, because more often than we might like to believe, decisions about who signs where aren't always as simple as "is he good enough to be worth that contract?".

Hey, who wants to bet davearm is gonna argue with me that owners can't be that stupid?

I know about the infamous Boras dossiers. In fact I believe I mentioned, Boras is very aggressive in seeking top value for his clients.

As best I can tell, we're not arguing at all.

So, the Natinals be looking pretty swank with this big chuck of man flesh gloving up first. If he signs there, I may be purchasing a spring training ticket and praying for a Stasburg start.

If we don't sign Prince, I hope the Nats do. I'm about 2 hours away and go see them play 4 or 5 times a year anyway. They've got a core group of guys anyone should be envious of, at this stage. It'd be nice to see them competing for that division.

They still have a ways to go before the Phillies or even Marlins or Braves start quaking. As of now, they have a strong rotation which could suddenly be downgraded to decent or worse if Strasberg ends up Prioring out but as for their offense, they have Ryan Zimmerman but after that theres Morse who gets that Jose Bautista needs 5 more .900+ OPS seasons before people will take him seriously and then Werth who will need a strong rebound. Beyond that, they're very iffy and I don't know how far Harper and Rendon are to the big leagues, and even when Rendon is ready he plays the same position as Zimmerman and I don't know if either have ever played another one. There pens also weak beyond Storen and Clippard.

You are really short selling the Nationals right now.

1B Fielder

2B Rendon

3B Zimmerman

SS Espinosa

C Ramos

LF Morse

CF Werth

RF Harper?

Strasburg

Zimmermann

Gonzalez

Wang?

Detwiler?

Lannan?

Bullpens always fluctuate, but I am sure they can get by. That is a really, really solid lineup. The front 3 of the rotation is border line disgusting. I would be thrilled if that was a Cubs squad.

Yeah, but ... but ... the outfield defense is bad.

Again, youre assuming Rendon and Harper are in big leagues. Without them it's a very different picture. Take Fielder out of that lineup, and it becomes pedestrian at best.

I'm not anticipating Rendon or Harper up at any point early in the year, and of the two, I think Harper has a better chance to be up this year. That said, that lineup, even without Fielder, is one top of the order hitter away from being good. Sure, any rotation that loses their ace is going to struggle, but Stra/Zim/Gonz is one of the better trios out there, and Wang looked really good down the stretch last year. Add in Detwiler and Lannan, and there's good rotation depth. The middle relief options are a question mark, but really, how many teams have solid middle relief, on paper, entering the season. Having a dominant back two is what it's about. Add in a system that's still fairly solid, and an aggressive GM, along with an owner willing to spend, and not to mention, two elite prospects in the wings, and I think they are up there. The Phillies probably enter the season as favorites, but a weakened system and an aging core means some big question marks.

On paper, the NL East might be the best overall division in baseball. It's close btw them and the AL East, but I tend to think the Mets will be more competitive than the Orioles.

Yep take away all of their good players, and the guys left aren't good. :)

rendon and harper should be regulars in the bigs by 2013.

Even then, you probably want to give them a year or two before they really get their bearings in. By then the Phillies should be old and broken and the Nats should be sitting pretty although the Braves and probably Marlins will be threats. I was talking more in terms of 2012. This being said, unlike some posters and media members I understand that signing Fielder doesn't have to be a win now move and yes, it would be very good for them.

I seriously doubt Rendon ever logs more than a handful of games at 2B at the MLB level.

isn't rendon supposed to be a superior defender at 3b? if he can even play a decent 2b, his bat could be monstrous (like chase utley-type impact) relative to other 2b around the league. i can't see either him or zimmerman shifting to 1b; their defensive abilities would be wasted there. i guess the other possibility would be corner OF, but then you run into werth and harper.

i think 2b makes the most sense... the greatest downside being that 2b get injured more frequently than any position on the diamond except for catchers.

I'm not saying he doesn't have the athleticism to handle 2B. He does. But as you stated, 2B get injured very frequently... and Rendon already has plenty of scouts using the term "injury-prone." I think it's more likely he's traded than anything else.
