Unfortunately, it's appearing like we actually have interest in this guy. Heyman had predicted 2 years and 9 mill for him. To me, that's insane for him. Although I have seen blurbs where he's definitely wanting 2 guaranteed years. He IS a lefty, something we want and probably need. Sveum and Bosio(assuming he's our next pitching coach) already know the guy well. Maybe they want a short term back of the rotation guy? Makes sense, but I know I'd much rather have Bedard. Hell, he has serious upside, at least compared to Capuano. Why not Maholm? Or especially Chen, even if he does want 4 years. I guess I understand the whole "we already know this guy" approach, but isn't Capuano a guy you should expect to get for a million or so at the tail end of the offseason? The Sun Times mentioned this and Ace did as well, so I'm preparing myself for this one.

Count me as not being a fan. I'm willing to bet that were the Cubs to sign him, Tim would end up having to put a word filter for "Crapuano".

Thankfully, the Twins also appear to be interested according to Rotoworld.

Chen already resigned with the Royals, did he not?

He did. I should have clarified. I meant Wei- yin Chen, the Taiwanese lefty coming over this year. He's 26 and is evidently wanting a 4 year deal for around 16 mill.

I'm not a huge fan of giving Capuano anything more than a one year deal with something like a vesting option for a second year based on IP.

Regarding Wei Yin Chen, do you know if he's declared free agency yet? Apparently he has that option available if he wants to jump to the other side of the pond.

W-Y Chen, Francis, Bedard would all be better options than Capuano, I think. Are we really going to be pouring $9 million a year into two filler players? Seems like a waste of money.

Much like Chen, if we needed a back of the rotation starter, I'd be dine with him at the right price. However, we have our share of 4-5 starter options in Wells, Cashner, Samardzjia, Coleman, Struck, Cabrera, and Jackson if he doesn't get taken in the Rule 5.

I think it's a good idea to go get a solid veteran to help fill the 4-5 spots in the rotation. I just question why to give Capuano 2/9 when we there are better options out there (Chen, Francis, Bedard).

MLBTR

The Pirates are interested in outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and free agent left-handers Wei-Yin Chen and Tsuyoshi Wada, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Cespedes is expected to become a free agent relatively soon and Wada and Chen have been able to negotiate with MLB teams since free agency began Thursday.

Brace yourselves, kids. He's agreed to terms with an unknown team per MLBTR

Rotoworld:

Jim Bowden of SiriusXM Radio reports that free agent starter Chris Capuano has agreed to terms on a deal.

Bowden doesn't have the team or details of the contract yet, but he says the deal is done. The Twins and Cubs have been connected to him, but it's unclear at this point if he wound up signing with either of those clubs. Stay tuned.

Wow, that is a lot for him. Apparently it means the end of Hiroki Kuroda there. Any interest in him on a 1-2 year deal at age 36?

I totally would, but it looks like he's only up for the Dodgers or Japan.

Kuroda would be an excellent one or two year option. But, as has been mentioned, he's probably headed back to Japan now. I guess I could see him staying somewhere within the state of California, since it's also been reported he'd consider teams on either coast. Still, does nothing at all for the Cubs though.

I would really like to get Kuroda, he's been very good since coming to MLB and underrated IMO. But he said a few weeks ago if he can't sign with one of the two LA teams he will just go back to Japan.

Yeah, Kuroda's actually a really good pitcher. I would love to get him. He's probably not going to pitch 200 innings, but the Cubs have enough young guys to pick up the slack, and he would still allow them to reasonably afford another guy ahead of him in the rotation.

Kuroda is supposedly "wide open" now as to where he'll pitch next year. I think he'd be a great fit on a one year deal. If we build for the future moreso than go crazy this offseason spending, an addition of Fielder and him would still give us a shot at competing in 2012 possibly.

Yeah, Kuroda on a 1-2 year deal would be a great move. He's still a quality pitcher and even though he'd be a short term only guy, he'd almost certainly be a better value than a guy like Buerhle, who's also a short term only guy.

Adding Kuroda would also soften the blow a bit if we missed out on both Wilson and Darvish.
