The other one was about draft related stuff, so I figure we can use this as a place to post about the new agreement as details begin to come out.

Here's some news on the FA rankings.

Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal

New rules take effect next winter. Elias rankings gone. Top FAs subject to comp if teams make them qualifying offers north of $12M. #MLB

Source: All remaining Type A relievers - Madson, K-Rod, Bell - will NOT be subject to draft-pick compensation this off-season. MORE

Teams that sign those relievers, and certain other Type As, will not forfeit picks. Teams that lose those players will still get them

Wow.

We had known about the additional wild card, but this was news to me:

Source: Rule that a team cannot play another club from same division in Division Series will most likely be eliminated in new playoff format.

For example: If PHI has best record, and Braves/Nats are No. 4-5 seeds, PHI could play winner of ATL/WASH under new format,in all likelihood.

Except none of the things are great.

Nothing about an extra 1-game playoff between two 80-something-win teams following a 162-game season is "great."

Selig is the master of change just for the sake of change. He's basically the Tony LaRussa of pro sports commissioners; just because you make a lot of moves or transactions in sheer quantity doesn't mean you're particularly effective at actually accomplishing anything positive.

If there had been a 1 game wildcard round last year, the "worst" team in the field would have had 89 wins. This isn't going to create situations like the other sports where sub .500 teams make the playoffs

lol...you understand the part about the CBA being collectively bargained, right? Selig didn't wave his magic commissioner wand and make these things happen.

Changing that is a no-brainer given the new WC situation, because half the point is the give the 1 seed a game against a somewhat depleted WC opponent that needed to win an extra game just to get there.

Oh no.

International bonuses undergoing drastic overhaul. Among the biggest: Starting in 2013-14, teams can trade $ from their international pool. For example: Worst team in baseball gets $5M to spend internationally. If team doesn't want to spend it all, it can trade $ to another team. Teams can trade for only 50% more than their international spending cap. So if a team has a $2.5M cap, most it can trade for is $1.25M. Draft tax is harsh: Teams that go more than 5% over slot get a 75% tax. From 5-10% over, a 75% tax and loss of 1st-round pick the next year. More draft tax: Go 10-15% over, 100% tax and loss of 1st- and 2nd-round picks. 15% and higher is 100% tax and loss of two first-round picks. Every team will have $2.9M to spend in international bonus money this season. Money is not tradeable this year. Sources: Cubans under 23 years old and with less than three years in pro ball will be considered "amateurs" and count against int'l bonus $. In other words, players like Yoenis Cespedes are safe. Had Aroldis Chapman defected now, however, he would have received way less than $30M. What MLB wanted more than anything with draft is players to get selected in order of talent. MLB believes this system will force that.

Who are the ad wizards that signed off on this one?

Are you kidding me?

Very interesting: There is a "competitive balance lottery" that awards lowest-revenue and smallest-market teams extra draft picks. There will be six draft picks immediately after the first round given out via lottery to teams with 10 lowest revenues, 10 smallest markets. From an MLB/MLBPA release: "A club’s odds of winning the lottery will be based on its prior season’s winning percentage." For the teams that don't get one of those six picks, they will be entered in another lottery open for all teams w/ 6 picks after 2nd round.

Well, the first time in my lifetime where the Cubs were legitimately going to have an advantage due to their ownership and their front office and we just got butt fucked by MLB. Thanks a lot, assholes.

103 years might as well be 125. [expletive] this.

This is horrible horrible horrible.

Only winner in all this is college baseball.

Also, draft signing deadline moved up to mid-July.
