While the Sox certainly had interest in Cespedes and to a lesser degree Concepcion, the younger Soler has the greatest appeal to them, the official said. “He has incredible raw power,’’ the official said of the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, though he wasn’t quite as ready as others to credit Soler with plus speed and being a plus defender.

At this point, the official said once Soler signs, it would be best to start him in Class A ball, although without having in camp, that’s just a projection.

The Sox official said that there are indications that Soler will establish his residency in the Dominican Republic in a couple of weeks, a required step before clubs can begin negotiating with him. That timetable, as it did with Cespedes, could change, the official said, but the Sox have maintained communication with Soler’s agent, Barry Praver.

“I played against him in Cuba -- he was younger, but he’s a good player," said Boston’s 22-year-old Cuban shortstop, Jose Iglesias, who would have seen Soler when he was 16 or 17.

There are a number of teams interested in Soler, but he could be the centerpiece of an intense competition between the Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs and Theo Epstein, who according to some reports was preparing to make a four-year, $26 million for Soler. The White Sox, Yankees, Marlins, Phillies and Astros are all among the clubs who have been reported to be in on Soler, but the Sox are prepared to make a major push.

Hopefully this means Theo will go into a "win at all costs" mindset to beat Lucchino.

We've got his buddies alreadyand I think we'll do whatever it takes to get him here. The only way we don't get Soler is if we jumped the gun and got in trouble and it's been kept secret, which I seriously doubt is the case.

ESPN has leaked that Epstein did jump the gun by coming to a verbal agreement with Soler.

Hoyer put the deal in writing and went to deliver it last Saturday.

But since he believed the FedEx office was closed, it's still sitting in his refrigerator, so the Cubs are fine.

Judging by the list of suiters and the way this offseason has gone in regards to big name free agents, my money's on The Padres.

It's Peter Gammons, he's probably just catching up on January news now.

I caught that as well. Sounds like recycled news, but I remember thinking the same thing the morning of the day Z was traded when I saw a Tweet from a Venezuelan source that the Cubs and Marlins were discussing a trade for him so who knows.

That was the original rumored price, and if the offer has been on the table the entire time, and nobody has been willing to match it the only thing in the way of a done deal could be his establishing residency and officially becoming a free agent.

I think he's finally accepted that Theo is not on the Red Sox anymore and lifted his embargo on Cubs news.

Rogers chimes in

By Phil Rogers, Tribune reporter

Even though the process drags on, the drama has seeped out of the Jorge Soler derby. An executive with a team that had been pursuing him says he believes the reports that Soler has agreed to a $27-million deal with the Cubs. The feeling is they blew away the competition in bidding for the 19-year-old center fielder, using a war chest they had accumulated by cutting the 2012 payroll with an eye on the future. …

What a sentence. They pay him to do this.

If we sign Soler, the next step will be to really beef up the pitching we will have to eventually have. Which should be possible through the draft.

so if we do sign soler, is our future core pretty secure?

it's amazing how the foundation is getting built.

Considering the majority are prospects, no, but at least there's the chance to have a future core.

First we lay the first foundation (bats) then a second foundation (pitchers) then empire.

1) Offense

2) Pitching

3) ????????

4) Profit

#3 is probably something really big like intangibles.

3) aggressively running the bases.
