Goldstein was asked what the square route of Soler's eventual signing bonus is and he said somewhere between 5000 and 5500. I have little doubt we've gotten some sort of agreement with Soler, but I am worried we could lose him because it's possibly been done illegally, on some level. I hope it all gets swept underneath the rug somehow.

There is no concern with that because no one has signed anything. As Goldstein said previously, Soler's agent is famous for coming to a handshake agreement early and taking his player off the market because of that

From Roto, Get it done Theo!!

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies are considered a longshot to sign Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler.

Salisbury notes that the Phillies have never spent much money in the Latin American market, and he doesn't expect them to alter that approach for Soler. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. confirmed Thursday that his team has interest in the outfielder, but he cautioned to the Philadelphia Inquirer that, "It may come down to where he wants to play and, of course, the money." Many consider the Cubs the favorites to land the 19-year-old, with the Yankees also in the mix.

Would be funny if, after making such a stink about all the teams in on Soler, the others, one-by-one, say they're not interested at the price expected to be paid - namely, something in the upper $20 million range from a team like the Cubs?

I really like the sound of it, but it definitely has a familiar tone to it...

The Chicago Tribune suggests that the White Sox could overspend to ''make a deal happen'' with Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler.

The White Sox have a shortage of run-producers behind Dayan Viciedo and were able to move payroll by trading Carlos Quentin and Jason Frasor while allowing Mark Buehrle and Juan Pierre to leave in free agency. The Cubs are widely-considered the favorites to land Soler, with the Yankees and Phillies also reportedly ''in the mix.''

acting like the shortage on run producers thing is somehow relevant is hilarious.

He had to have meant "in the minor leagues" because making that statement and not including paul konerko is pretty strange.

Good point.

Would be a bit more accurate to say they have a shortage of everything there.

I took it as minor leagues, but it's still ridiculous. "Because their minor league sucks, that's my proof they might outbid the Cubs".

I don't get what the issue is with what was written. They have a shortage of good hitters and because of that they could decide to spend big on a potential top prospect. What exactly is the problem?

That he might be a good hitter in 3-5 years?

If you take it as though he's speaking to their major league roster, it's dumb. If you take it as a comment on their system, it's definitely less dumb, because, yea, they have a shortage of hitters in their system, but they also have a shortage on everything in their system because it's pretty much the worst in baseball. They should be acquiring good prospects because they are assets. It's fairly irrelevant what "need" is in the system when you're talking a 19 year old IFA who is one of the top guys available. If you can get that guy at a price you see fit, you get him. Doesn't really matter what you have.

Yeah, still not a problem with what was written. They don't have guys like him, they could use guys like him, and they might decide to spend on him.

Soler makes sense for everyone, but arguebly, he means more to the Cubs than anyone. Sure, he could end up the cornerstone of the Epstein era, but more importantly it's the fit and the best place to spend the money. For example, the White Sox and the Astros (who are the latest team in on the sweepstakes)There's not much of value on either farm. Therefore, if they have some 25-30 mil to spend on the minors, they might be wiser to spread it around multiple high ceiling prospects rather than spend it on one guy.

The Cubs, on the other hand seemingly have a bright future. We have a lot of guys who seem like they could be viable contributers at the big league level in the next 5 months to 5 years on one level or another. Paying that much to add one guy who could push our system into the top 10 would be money very well spent.

i have no idea why the white sox have been so cheap in the draft, but they always have been. the new draft rules will actually benefit them because they haven't been taking advantage of the cost-efficiency in amateur talent like some other smarter organizations.

I think so. Pitching-wise, it's weak. But you do have McNutt, Maples, Rhee, Concepcion, and Wells. All have a shot at becoming rotation guys. Position players have more upside with Brett, Baez, Szczur, Vitters, Vogelbach, Hernandez, Candelario, Golden, Rizzo, Torreyes, and Lake. If you add Soler to this group, our position players are probably just about as strong as anyones.

I am really interested to see what Vogelbach, Baez, Candelario do over a full season. Torreyes and Golden could make big jumps this year with success at their next levels. I think Golden will be a guy to watch this year, the average may not shoot up but if he gets 400 AB's or so I would not be shocked if he hits 18-20 homers in A ball.

Agree on Soler, adding him makes our potential offensive core of Castro, Jackson, Rizzo, Szczur, Soler, Torreyes, Castillo and maybe Vitters very appealing.
