Why do you care if anyone calls Kaplan a racist?

I have seen the term thrown around by a select few on this board with regards to Cubs fans in general. Pretty broad brush to paint with, no? And this has nothing to do with Kaplan. And if Kaplan was a racist like some on this board toe the line on, what the hell is he posing with a (gulp) Pujols jersey for?

Now, tell me, how many in this bunch were ripped by the media and fans for being lazy? How many were the target of racism by Cubs fans?

If the answer is none of them, could it be that they, you know, actually performed and were great teammates?

Na, couldn't be.

Some of the media's best friends were non-white.

There's a difference between calling someone a racist and saying that racism colors their opinions.

I don't think that David Kaplan thinks to himself "Man, I sure do hate Hispanic people. They are inferior to us white people in every way."

He, and others, just let subtle stereotypes infect the way they view players. It's why only white players are scrappy, too.

But, but, what about Cubs fans? These no good black players I mentioned were clearly hated by Cubs fans throughout their careers. Oh, wait.

I don't believe I ever called Cubs fans in general racist. I said many of them were hypocritical for loving players like Ron Santo while hating players like Carlos Zambrano.

Because he's not some overt Klan member; he just lets the inherent racism of our society color his opinions of players he doesn't like.

Clearly, Kaplan has no use for hispanics as the photo below illustrates.

He despised Todd Hundley. Of course, he was hispanic, so you might be on to something.

The "some of his best friends are Hispanic" defense.

Admittedly I'm not a numbers geek like many people here, but is it fair to compare WAR from a third basemen to a pitcher?

Completely fair. The primary use of WAR is to be able to compare the general value of players across different roles and positions.

Regarding WAR with a pitcher, you have to wonder how useful offensive WAR is. Last year Dontrelle Willis had a combined WAR that was equivalent of Zambrano, and I sure the hell wouldn't want him in the rotation. Personally I would much rather prefer a pitcher that was good at pitching.

Why is that your question about WAR with a pitcher? Offensive stats are almost certainly more trustworthy than pitching stats.

please explain this. this reeks of "walks matter for pitchers but not for hitters". the total stats for all pitchers in a year match exactly the total stats for all hitters in a year. How is one more trustworthy or valuable than the other?

Man, you really must know Dave Kaplan well. All you have is your very flawed opinion to draw from.

I'll make this as clear as I can: Kaplan's "racism" stems from his repeated fallback to stereotypical criticisms of non-white players (lazy, doesn't care, gives up, etc.).

The "hey, he didn't like some white people too" defense.

Oh, so it was just players who were not performing? Wow, welcome to fans of any team in any sport.

It's not racism how he dislikes players who are bad. It's racism how he inevitably falls on racial stereotypes to describe them.

Are we talking about A-Ram here? Has he called Z lazy?

Look, I am not a Zambrano fan because he is lazy and he doesn't get the most out of his abilities. However, I agree that he is a tremendously talented guy who should be a staff ace if he could ever learn to control his emotions and would report to spring training in shape and would work hard enough during the season to stay that way.
