I was just thinking about Devin Hester's return yesterday, and it just dawned on me how weird it was that Hester randomly just stopped taking kicks to the house for 2 full seasons (08 and 09) before picking it up again like no big deal. What happened during those 2 seasons?

Kick returns by year

2006: 7 (including missed FG and super bowl)

2007: 6

2008: 0

2009: 0

2010: 3

2011: 3 (on pace for 5-6)

Randomly? I thought it was common knowledge that he was putting more effort into being a receiver in those years. He didn't return as often, and when he did he was partially worn down by playing every down as a receiver.

I guess so. That was what I was saying at the time too, but it seems odd that he was that ineffective just from playing every down as a receiver. IIRC, he wasn't even getting good runbacks on punt returns much less touchdowns and some people were suggesting that they either pull him from WR or pull him from kick returns.

In 2006 and 2007 his PR/KR numbers were 47/20 and 42/43, in 2008 it was 32/31 and 2009 was 24/7. His receptions/rushes went from 0/0, 20/7, 51/6. He was returning less often and doing a worse job of it as his nonreturn duties increased. In 2010 his non-return touches declined, his returns increased, and his success increased. I think it's a pretty simple explanation.

By the way, Billick's narrative there was such typical BS where the announcer acts as though he knew exactly what happened based on what the ref called, when the video completely contradicts his statement. Starts at the shoulder and works it's way up to the head? WTF

there you go.

My googles must have been borked. I'd been searching that and couldn't find anything other than stories about it.

p.s. i've watched that hit a million times already, it's great.

The NFL has fined Detroit Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch $7,500 for hitting a runner who was already on the ground, a league source said Thursday.

It likely is the first in a series of fines to stem from Sunday's contentious game against the Bears in Chicago, which the Bears won 37-13.

Officials review all plays involving potential violations, even if not penalized during the game, and they are referred to Ray Anderson and Merton Hanks, executive vice president and vice president of football operations, respectively.

Anybody find video of Vanden Bosch late hit on Forte?

It was definitely flagrant. While I don't really think the hit itself was all that late on a player that was basically already down, there was pretty clear intent to harm in the way he pounced on Forte's head/neck area. It was very unnecessary to do what he did.

I have not yet.

Fines have been sent out though. Looks like Moore got 15k and Stafford only $7.5k. Interesting.
