That's because the Cubs front office does not allow leaks!

I would give him 3/33 tops, and even that is stretching sanity. I hope we walk away if his representation continues to pine for a contract longer than 3 years. The kid is apparently 26. A three year contract would give him the ability to show his stuff, and land a more lucrative contract for the remainder of his prime years and mid-thirties. Eight years for possible production without ever playing a major league game? It doesn't scream smart.

8/40 is a much better deal for the Cubs than 3/33 from a time value of money perspective.

Was it 8/40? I guess I was just assuming it was 5/40.

But yeah, I'd even rather do 5/40 than 3/33.

I was just responding to the last couple sentences in his post.

I just looked at Cots, and for some reason I had been operating under the assumption that Aroldis Chapman was only given a three year deal. Oh well, good morning to me after a late night of hell. So, I guess these guys don't mind being locked up for a while. If the "rumors" are anything to go by, he is looking at 8/60-65, which isn't too bad. Where were you getting the 8/40 from Tim?

On the eight years, I was just replying to the paticular post. I put in the $40M because that seemed to be the most recent rumors from the thread.

A scout who has seen Yoenis Cespedes told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that the Cuban outfielder has "too long of a swing for me" and compared the 26-year-old to Wily Mo Pena.

"He has too long of a swing for me," the scout said. "He could strike out a lot. He reminds me of Wily Mo Pena a little with his power, but whether you can devote those kinds of dollars and project him as a top major league player, that’s quite a leap of faith.’’ There's no question that anyone who signs Cespedes will be taking a risk, but, given the number of teams that appear to be showing interest, he should have no trouble landing a big deal.

So damn risky with this guy

hey i made the wily mo comparison on page 1.

i smell a career change

Are you Carfado's source? Good job throwing the Boston fans off.

Wonder who made this offer, assuming it's legit... From MLBTR:

MONDAY, 10:28am: The $35-50MM estimate for Cespedes may be light, a GM tells Gammons. Cespedes' people told one club they already have an offer with $10MM up front and eight years.

Posted
All depends on what he's getting each of those eight years. Could the up front money indicate that the per year salary will be in the lower range?

That's what I was wondering too. Maybe the offer was 8 years/$50 mill with $10 mil up front and $5mil per, or something similar.

Yeah, that's not even good agentspeak there. Someone offers him something like 8/40 with 10 million as a signing bonus, and that gets spun to think that he's going to destroy a 35-50 range?

In his highlights, his swing wasn't long although I'm sure the editors deserve credit. Like many Latin players directly coming over, I could see him being a high K/low BB type of hitter with plus power and plus bat speed.

Hoyer is meeting with an advisor for Cespedes in the Dominican, per thekapman. Sorry for no link, on my phone

Is it a pretty big deal that Epstein and Hoyer travelled al the way there to see him or is that pretty standard procedure for a top international prospect?

I think they normaly have international scouts that handle most amateur signings. With something like this involving so much money and years I'm sure they wanted to take a much more hands on approach and actually see the guy and talk to him themselves before getting further involved, it only makes sense.

Levine stated last week that McLeod was down there already and that Theo and Jed were coming in to see him on Monday and Tuesday.

I'm starting to get the feeling we will be signing atleast one cuban free agent.

I want both of them. But I hate to say it, if I had to choose, I'd take Soler. Less money, sounds just as promising, and will allow us to do much more at the major league level as well, especially since it's starting to sound like Cespedes won't necessarily come at a bargain price.
