Garza, Darvish, Dempster, Zambrano, XX

Why would you need any more?

did Randy Wells die?

His arm kinda did.

his arm looked fine in august

It looked considerably less than fine in April, May, June, July and September.

If we sign or trade for 2 starters this offseason, which is very likely, then Wells isn't making the rotation. Garza, Dempster, and Z all have a spot secured.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Z's spot is secured.

because he had an arm injury you fool

the two years before that? both 3-win seasons basically for free

wonder if we'd have any use for that

Oh, well, if he was good in 2010, then that solves everything for 2012. Pen him in, no need to look elsewhere. Arm injuries never linger, recur, or take away from a pitcher's stuff.

He was hurt in the first half and mediocre in the second half, and he only got to mediocre in the second half because of some pretty strong BABIP variance in his favor. There's no way he should be handed a rotation spot next year without at least seriously looking elsewhere.

Making him the 5 starter with guys like Cashner, Samardzija, and McNutt lurking is hardly counting on him to be a crucial piece. It's the responsible thing to do given the team's composition and limitations.

I see him as the fifth starter by default only. Assuming we add at least one starter in the offseason, and Zambrano behaves himself, and everyone stays healthy, then Wells only gets a rotation spot if we don't think Cashner and/or Samardzija are ready to take it. If he gets bumped by one of those guys, then keep him ready in long relief or Iowa (he'd have to give permission to be optioned, I think), but I won't shed a tear if he doesn't get another shot at the rotation because we come up with five better options.

so...immediately after sensationalizing Wells' injury concerns you suggest we give Cashner a crack at the 5th starter spot

Cashner has oodles more upside.

Wells wasn't just hurt, he was bad. You tried to gloss over this by splitting out August, but it doesn't wash. He sucked in June, July and September, and his brief flirt with decency in August was fueled by a .181 BABIP. I see no reason to go to any lengths to hold open a rotation spot for a 29-year-old who sucked last year.

If we get to mid-March and no one has particularly stepped forward or we have some injuries, then he's fine for plugging into a hole.

oodles more upside than a pitcher just one year removed from two straight 3.5-win seasons?

you've really got high hopes for a guy who's never topped 100 IP in any year of professional baseball and is currently getting battered in the AFL

3.5? Keep creeping it up, and in a few more posts Wells will be a 5-WAR pitcher.

fWAR: 3.0, 3.2

bWAR: 3.0, 3.2

bpWAR: 2.3, 2.4 (these tend to be lower in general).

But yes, I do believe he has more upside. Randy Wells' two good seasons relatively out of nowhere and were always based on strikeout rates that made it very difficult to project sustained success for him. And, unsurprisingly, it caught up with him last year. He was replacement level at best for four full months.

yea, I basically just forgot about him

there you go, don't even need a 5th

I think that pretty much sums up Randy Wells' appeal at this point.

as a fifth, I'm ok with a guy I'll forget exists from time to time

Maybe because we already plan to spend so much on Pujols and Darvish.

You're not interested in anything cool.

why should we sign this guy when we can just platoon six guys in cf who all put up wars up 0.5 last year and get a 3 win player?

This was mentioned by davell in the International FA thread, but it is rumored that the Cubs are more interested in 19 year old Cuban OF Jorge Soler.
