Cespedes won't need to be posted.

Substitute approved or whatever other word. The general point is still true at we have some flexibility to wait as long as we don't move Byrd until a later time.

Of course, moving Byrd would be harder after everyone's OF is set, too.

I kind of hate we're in an either/or situation and can't really go get Cespedes and Sizemore both. At least not without making moves to accommodate them.

If you trade Byrd, you can easily accomodate both.

There's no guarantee Cespedes will make the big leagues off the bat.

True, but if you're signing him it is almost certainly with the idea of playing him in 2012 at some point.

But I guess that gives you time during the season to move Byrd.

If Cespedes actually pans out as a star, he'd be one hell of a bargain.

He's a hell of a value if he even becomes an Alexei Ramirez type talent.

Yeah, I certainly hope the Cubs are hard on the trail.

Cespedes is Cuban for Fukudome.

Not that Fukudome was a bad deal at all.

Exactly what I was thinking. Only problem, though a minor one, is holding back whatever payroll slot they set for Cespedes. If they set his value at say, Fuku's contract, that money has to be allocated and ready in 2 months if he decides to come here. If he doesn't, then you have to figure out what to do with that money, if anything at all.

No, there's not a posting fee involved. Only up front money would come in a signing bonus. If he signs a 6 year 36 mill contract, for instance, it's paid out however it's structured. Cuba doesn't get any money, unlike Japanese teams.

Except he's younger and freakishly (a freak among freaks...obviously all MLBers are freakish talents) talented.

He seems freakishly athletic. How that translates into MLB skills is still somewhat uncertain.

Absolutely. Poor choice of words there, perhaps.

@BenBadler Top 6. Would be a 1-1 guy for some teams RT @amr120402 where would cespedes have gone in this years draft if eligible?

Wow, #1 in this year's draft is pretty strong.

With what Theo has said about paying guys on future and not past production, I'm starting to think Cespedes and Chen could both be very big on our radar. If it's conceivably going to take 30ish mill or so for Cespedes and Chen wants a 4 year 20 mill type deal, getting a potential superstar bat and a solid mid rotation lefty for those type of figures in their primes makes a ton of sense. And it could leave us money to make one major acquisition as well and keep the payroll in line with where it's been.

When did it become the trendy thing to talk about getting hard on NSBB? I am not a big fan of the movement. It's really just getting way overused and stupid at this point. It got old a long time ago.

On topic: I am fully on board with signing Yeonnis Cespedes. I would love to see him in the opening day lineup.

Any time you can get a guy with potential to be a star and likely at least an average or better player for ~$6 million that's something you definitely should do.

Having Cespedes and Jackson in the OF next year could make it a lot easier to watch the corpse of Soriano out there.

It gets me wet.
