For the record, I would love to see Ryno as a coach on the 2012 Cubs. 3B coach, fielding coordinator or maybe Castro's personal defensive coach. Put the guy in a position where he can have a positive impact while he gains some experience with the new organizational philosophy. If he buys in, then maybe he gets a shot when Francona retires after winning the 2013 series with the Cubs.

It could never work. He should get a major league coaching job somewhere, but if it did it in Chicago the fans and media would bring up the possibility of promotion after every loss.

yea. I mean all those meltdowns and profanity laced tirades Ryne had. JUST LIKE TWINS.

You're talking about all the times he got him thrown out of minor league games?

no, I'm trying to understand your implication that Ryne Sandberg = Zambrano

He doesn't. Sandberg is worse. Left that awesome 94 team high and dry because his pansy little marriage was in trouble. Pfft. They got a divorce like a day later, anyway. A real team player would've come right back.

Comparing Z and Ryno is about as funny as it gets. Lets see what Z has to say at his HOF speech. Oh, wait.

Self-righteous whining about kids these days from the guy who refused to get his uniform dirty because it might risk his fielding percentage?

That's not a point in Sandberg's favor.

The awful things said about Sandberg here border on insane.

And then there are the people who are just ignorant talking about how he'll have Pujols bunt in the 1st inning.

He was told he wouldn't be interviewed and then went out of his way to praise the Cubs.

He probably won't be the greatest manager, but it takes people with some serious problems in their lives to have such bitterness towards someone like Sandberg.

Exactly what I said. Some therapy is in order for some of these "classy people".

So that makes the Cardinals, Red Sox and Cubs that need a new manager. Going to be an interesting game of managerial musical chairs going on this offseason.

But for the first time, I actually feel incredibly confident that we will get Theo's prime target. It all started when Tom went after Theo and got him. The dominoes have been falling in place since then.

Hendry almost always got the guy he targeted.

Honestly, we are 3rd choice on that list.

Fell sort of badly for Mike. Not saying he was the greatest manager ever, but he seems like a nice guy. The team was so poorly constructed that he really had no chance.

I don't want Ryno largely because I don't want him to come in here and ruin his legacy as a great player by being a poor manager. Looks like Theo isn't interested in any case.

For the record, my problem isn't with Sandberg himself, my problem is with all of the people who want him hired for all of the wrong reasons.

Though I doubt it would work out, for the reasons gooney stated, I absolutely wouldn't have a problem with him on staff in Chicago, theoretically (because it wouldn't work).

Well, whether or not Sandberg would be a good manager is immaterial; Theo and company want to go in a different direction. Sandberg might very well be a great manager, but I think he needs the opportunity to show that outside the crucible of Wrigley Field.

In other news, now that we know he won't be the manager, let's focus the debate back on who could be the manager.

I agree that Cardinals job will be 3rd.

Only if we're offering the 3rd largest salary.

It was Quade's poor handling of the pitching staff that really soured me on him.

Well-played, sir, well-played.

I have to think that outside of the Cubs job he was never going to be a major league manager. So, he got a shot and made more money doing that (I assume) than he ever would just bouncing around from minor league gigs and bench duty. But I did have some pity on him for being so overwhelmed.

I've been trying to figure out a way to verbalize this correctly. Well done.

Well, your name kind of gives you away as a Cards fan. We don't have a problem with Cards fans here; we do have a problem with Cards trolls, however.

Surprisingly, you guys didn't react to the Sandberg new as emotionally as I thought you would. As a cards fan, I really wasn't opposed to the idea.

Most of the people on this board were against him being hired. Most of us are happy.

The Sandberg bashing is just trolling, for the most part.

Agreed and this is the same reason that Riggins needs to go as well.
