I dont like this Hoyer deal. Giving up Cashner for a GM is crazy.

Cashner? I thought they just gave up the rights to homefield advantage in any future playoff series.

It's the '84 debacle all over again.

Kind of interesting that Hoyer would want to make such a lateral move (at best), unless he felt like he just couldn't compete at San Diego. I found an article online of him lamenting what a small scouting budget they had when he took over the job, though he had been able to talk Moorad into investing more money into it. He also said that Petco has been a huge factor that he hadn't quite been able to wrap his head around yet.

Also get the feeling he knew that he was skating on thin ice after a 70 win season, and that he wasn't going to survive another bad year. If Mooread wouldn't extend his contract that had to be a huge red flag. He and his wife are expecting their first child, and is maybe seeking more stability in the longrun. Gotta figure he knows he has a stable gig in Chicago as long as Theo is around (which should be a very, very long time).

Hoyer took a horrible farm system and turned it into a top 10ish one. Without even having a huge budget to do so.

And it didn't take him all that long to do that. When did he get hired? Fall 2009?

But it wasn't because of drafting. He did get two really good packages in the Gonzalez and Mike Adams trades, though.

I loved Theo Epstein going to the Cubs. Getting Jed Hoyer's like splitting aces and hitting two face cards. As I said: Cubs, sleeping giant.

Similarly, Josh Byrnes is an excellent fallback for San Diego. Still tons of brains in that front office (Hinch, MacLeod, Smith, Abbamondi).

Mistake on McLeod. Reportedly going to Cubs as well. Still, cupboard far from bare in San Diego was the point -- and ever richer in Chicago.

Come on down Jason McLeod...

A source told ESPNBoston.com that Epstein originally asked Byrnes to join him in Chicago, but Byrnes declined. Epstein then turned to Hoyer, his longtime friend and former assistant. Hoyer went to Moorad, told him of the offer from Epstein and said he would stay if the Padres gave him a five-year extension. Moorad, though reluctant to lose Hoyer, the source said, said he would not grant him the extension and told him he was free to take the Cubs job.

Quick, someone come argue with everyone for 20 pages about how the Padres are fools for not demanding Andrew Cashner in return.

Two weeks ago, I so would have taken you up on that.
