The man deserves his own thread. He's a fantastic addition to the staff and represents a vast improvement over Jim Hendry.

I'll be interested to see what (if anything) we gave up. Can't believe how quickly and quietly negotiations with San Diego have apparently gone.

From what I read (can't remember the article now), there's no compensation. Moorad has a good relationship with Ricketts, and wanted Byrnes to be GM anyway. So this is a way to lose Hoyer's salary, keep him happy, and promote the guy he really wants to be GM anyway.

So what do we have to send over to San Diego to get this thing done?

This should also be a San Diego Padres appreciation thread-for not being douchebags like the Red Sox.

Agreed.

Thank you San Diego for not acting like I did when I was 7 and didn't get the Nintendo game I wanted for Christmas

It's speculated that the Cubs won't have to send any compensation SD's way, since Moorad wanted Byrnes as GM anyway, and he doesn't consider going from GM of the Padres to GM of the Cubs to be a lateral move.

When word was circulating about Cherington (when Theo wasn't possible) I wished that the conversation was about Hoyer. Now we get Theo AND Hoyer (AND McLeod McLeon or is that McLeon, McLeod)...

BleacherNation Brett Taylor

.@ESPNChiCubs reporting that Epstein preferred Byrnes, who said no, then Hoyer, who first asked for extension in SD before saying yes.

A source told ESPNBoston.com that Epstein originally asked Byrnes to join him in Chicago, but Byrnes declined. Epstein then turned to Hoyer, his longtime friend and former assistant. Hoyer went to Moorad, told him of the offer from Epstein and said he would stay if the Padres gave him a five-year extension. Moorad, though reluctant to lose Hoyer, the source said, said he would not grant him the extension and told him he was free to take the Cubs job.

Quick, someone come argue with everyone for 20 pages about how the Padres are fools for not demanding Andrew Cashner in return.

Is there such a thing as a Padre fan to come do that?

Well, it didn't take Red Sox fans to do that last time.
