so we're supposed to listen to kaplan now? what a dramatic turn of events.

Pretty sure he broke the Harden trade too.

Indeed. He was all over the Harden trade weeks before it happened. His sources are usually spot-on when it comes to the Cubs.

The Cubs under Ricketts? I don't think anyone's had a good idea of what's going on in there since Ricketts came over...

From what I read on sosh, Theo is like a son to Gammons. This partially explains Gammons rant today on the Cubs. Gammons is hurting.

Is Theo like a son to Gammons, or does Pete think Theo is his son?

Here is the SOSH quote. Just a fan of his team like us, but it seems on the money.

I heard Gammons say HE advised Theo to take a year off. Gammons is incapable of being objective when it comes to Theo Epstein - Gammons thinks of him as family, a son, what have you. Anything Gammons reports about Theo should be viewed in that manner - not as a reporter offering news, but an emotionally vested mentor who attempts, and may have, influence or a personal agenda. If Gammons says Theo is thinking X, then he most likely heard that directly or has drawn a conclusion from extensive personal experience

so kaplan is reputable now when it comes to sources.

got it.

He has been for years. Like his opinions or not, he at least gets the info from people that know what's going on behind the scenes with the Cubs.

Like I said earlier, he was all over the Harden trade WEEKS before it happened when nobody else was. I've always been curious as to who his sources are, but all I know is they have a pretty good idea what's going on with the Cubs.

He always has been. It's just his opinions that are worthless.

The Trib just posted a Rogers blurb saying the sides are no closer to an agreement and Commish might have to step in. Someone(s) is going to look pretty stupid tomorrow.

And now this from the Globe:

Theo Epstein deal near

Announcement ‘possible’ by tomorrow

San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer, who previously worked for Epstein with the Red Sox, reportedly could pair up with him again in Chicago.

That most of all.

I'm sure he'll demand we all credit @thekapman for Theo coming to Chicago.

He's been all over most everything in regards to the Ricketts and the family's plan over the last couple of years.

A little something about Gammons. Was always a fan of his growing up, but the man is pretty much a complete Red Sox fanboy. I'm sure most may not believe me but I was shown an Email back in 2003 that he sent to Curt Schilling when he was contemplating waiving his no-trade clause before Theo, Jed and the rest of the entourage showed up at his house the day before thanksgiving. The email from a supposed objective national baseball writer was fanboy drivel pleading and begging Curt to come to Boston and help break the curse. I always knew PG was less than objective but it was pretty embarrassing. He sounded like a 15 year old boy pleading for his hero to show up at his birthday party. Anything written by him involving the Red Sox should be taken with a spoonful of salt.

Kaplan broke the story that Kerry Wood was coming back to the Cubs last year. He also reported the Cubs were closing in on a deal for Garza a few days before it happen. Yes Kaplan is stupid, annoying and a big meathead. But he does have some type of inside info, and it's not like him to report stuff that's not true. So of course take this as a grain of salt, but don't totally write it off as nonsense either. Because Kaplan doesn't usually report false nonsense, and when he does make claims like this it's usually true.

I wonder how involved Theo is in the Red Sox managerial search. If he truly is involved, this bodes well for the Cubs. My dream revenge scenario is that Theo gets here and names the BEST guy fast, trumping the Red Sox.

Larry Lucchino is really coming off as a jerk in this. Oh wait, he already was a jerk.

wat

Meh. I certainly dont want Ryno, though not as passionately against him as many people here. However, if we're going to accept Theo and his team as our lord and savior and his deciples and kiss the ground that he walks on, we should probably assume that he just might know a thing or two that we don't. Can't orgasm over the guy coming over(no pun intended) do to his track record and then blast his first move. I'm not saying that it's for sure going to happen (The Sandberg part) but if it does that's my take.

If they bring in Ryno, I hope it's for a short-term deal. My main fear with him is that once he's entrenched as manager, he'd be impossible to get rid of regardless of his managerial acumen and style.

Maybe that will change with a new sheriff in town.

Not thrilled about Sandberg, but willing to give him a chance if Theo thinks that's the way to go. I think a 2-year deal is fair. Curious if Ricketts is trying to create the atmosphere they have in NY, BOS, and StL that it's a privilege to play for the Cubs. If that's the case Sandberg is probably a good pick. Maybe they think they can convince him to manage the Theo Epstein way. Mainly, no unnecessary giving away of outs.

Epstein Limbo Day 8

Odds of deal completion: 80%

Page goal: 20

Topics of conversation: Chicago media's bizarre reverse boner for Crane Kenney, attempts by the Red Sox to spin the Cubs as incompetent, trying to learn to love Ryne Sandberg.

With Theo in the fold, I could come around on Sandberg.

I would rather have a GM that looks for talent, and a manager that pushes that talent to be all they can be than have a GM that looks for hard workers and a manager/coaching staff that tries to make them talented.
