Sooooo much internet smugness riding on this not being significant player compensation to Boston. And the other way around.

Yeah can't wait to see how this turns out

I think all parties involved stopped in here, and saw the swag all star team and decided they have to put an end to this asap

Now it appears incoming baseball boss Theo Epstein will bring Padres GM Jed Hoyer to Chicago to be the Cubs' new GM, reuniting the two old friends from Boston.

In an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, Hoyer, who is signed through 2013, declined comment on the speculation, which began Tuesday with a report on sportsillustrated.com.

The Cubs had no comment on the report, though sources indicated the job is Hoyer's if he wants it and the Padres let him out of his contract.

Though it would be a lateral move, Padres Vice-Chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad is likely to grant the Cubs permission to talk to Hoyer when the Epstein deal becomes official. Moorad and Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts have a strong relationship.

At first I misread that as though it were saying the Padres had let him out of his contract and I got excited.

Don't equate these forthcoming changes as a guarantee for a Title.

Last time I checked, baseball is still baseball, and the baseball gods make the decisions, meaning top players will make outs, prospects will make outs, non-prospects will make outs, and the real difference is the amount one pays for these outs.

The difference between winning and losing is skinny, especially in these days of drug testing. Go back and look at hitting and pitching stats in the pre-expansion era when coffee, caffeine, and speed were the drugs of choice, plus hot dogs and beer, and you will see what the standard was.

This change is no sure thing, but even if it was, what does it really bring you?

Not a paid off mortgage or a vacation home in the Keys, just worthless braggin rights????

Go be productive for your family, they are the only ones who care about YOU!!

Well, I was productive for my family tonight. I was at my sons basketball practice until 7PM. After that, I made dinner, took the dogs out and got the kids to bed. All of this while my wife is out of town.

Nothing wrong with this little thing we love called sports and the Cubs. Now YOU go be productive with your family and go back to WSI.

I hope Theo realizes he not only needs to build a great team, but also overcome outlandish Cardinals luck.

I've been sort of out of the loop the last few days with work and travel, but Theo coming in as the president, hiring a GM of his choice and then revamping the whole [expletive] system has to be the most exciting thing I've ever heard in my life.

http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2011/10/20/1019-mcnutt-i-thought-it-was-a-joke/

The right-hander didn’t know he was in the middle of the Epstein-to-Cubs talks until his Mesa Solar Sox teammates told him.

“I just thought it was a joke and then they showed me and I was like, ‘It’s for real,’” McNutt told WEEI in Boston after his start Wednesday. “I just didn’t think [the Cubs] would trade me because we need the starting pitching. But anything can happen. that’s just how the world works.

“[The rumor] just caught me by shock,” McNutt said. “I just didn’t think my name would be brought up, so I’m just going to sit and wait and see. Nothing’s probably going to happen until after the World Series, so that’ll probably be this time next week. You just kind of sit around and wait. Either way, they’re both good organizations. If they do trade me, sometimes organizations have to do things they don’t want to do and that’s just the nature of the game.”

And that dust they use.

I'm gonna stop right there, because if I take that one step further I'm going to get in trouble.

By the time this is over, everyone on this board will have changed his/her name to Epstein. Tim will have to change the name of the board to NSEB.

I feel the same way, and then a little sad because every other team in baseball has had a real front office for years.

It really is. Theo coming in and bringing in a brain trust with him to help him overhaul the organization and institute a real philosophy and institutional approach is probably the most significant (positive) event in most of our lives as Cubs fans.

Unless you look at is as a continuation of what was started when Ricketts bought the team, in which case that purchase was the most significant event.

Either way, this is really exciting.

Really, who would have imagined this the day before Hendry was canned?

The video someone posted in the celebration thread is amazing. Once this thing is announced I'm going to have to freak out and dance in the streets or something.

Epstein's a smarty. We've not had a genuine SMARTY run this team.
