[expletive] you humps. Go jump in a fire. Or go hug Kyle. This thread is for JOY.

the JOY of watching Castro being forced to bunt his way onto base with 2 outs or the JOY of watching Barney being told to steal 3rd?

theo is lebron. hahn is boozer. theo will stay in boston and we'll say things like "hahn is still a great hire" to mask our pain. then it will turn out hahn is not-so-great and we'll realize how close we were to epstein.

I'm a Cubs fan. I fully understand what is about to take place.

(and mostly I just like to [expletive] around because I'm getting giddy about Epstein being here)

One of the biggest hires in Cubs history that changes the face of the franchise forever?

Yeah, I just did that.

something else about Pedroia, he was absolutely godawful the first 50+ games to his career and despite the fans' protestations they kept him in there

yes, and that really contrasts with how the cubs treat most of their prospects (see felix pie). pedroia was lousy toward the tail end of 2006 when he got a cup of coffee, and continued to not hit for the first month of 2007. but he wasn't striking out much and they kept the faith.

So apparently Cashner was throwing 100 MPH today...Boston better not be asking about him!

at least one person in this thread has said that getting epstein could be more important than signing fielder or pujols, and everyone seems to agree that a good GM is really important, much more so than a manager. so why is it unreasonable for the red sox to ask for cashner when the marlins just gave up two of their top 5 prospects (coming into 2011, though their stock had slipped) for a lousy manager, and tampa gave up randy winn coming off a 5 win season to get piniella?

It isn't, really. We might have an immediate aversion to giving up a guy like Cashner, but when you take a step back, you'd have to say it'd be more than worth it. We're not talking about guys like Castro or Garza, but guys like Cashner and Vitters, who have warts and may or may not end up being anything.

And with Epstein, we're talking about a real organizational and cultural shift, something that will have sweeping positive implication. Is a guy like Cashner worth missing a shot at that? Of course it isn't.

Beacuse Guillen wasn't being promoted and the Cubs weren't tampering? And Chuck LaMar is nowhere near our organization.

it's a promotion, but the GM title is most important and given that the GM is the most important position in a sports organization, the red sox would have been completely justified in telling the cubs to [expletive] off and come back after next season when his contract is up.

i'm still trying to figure out how you think cashner is way too much compensation for a guy who's one of the most highly-regarded GMs in the game and who will shape the organization's future for the next several years.

Who is deciding if the compensation is too much or who they give up? Is it Theo himself making that decision as his first trade of his Cubs career for himself? Very odd position to be in to potentially cut your own wrists in order for the new team to get you. I'm feeling more and more like this is a done deal. Theo is a competitor and competitor's need new challenges and this just seems like it has all the aspects of a perfect fit. *Crossing Fingers*

Epstein seems to think it's pretty important to not have some megalomaniac as president above him, so I'd say president is most important. They would have been justified in the sense that he's under contract to them and they can do whatever they want. They wouldn't have been with regards to professional courtesy which has been granted for roughly forever.
