"The veteran all-star is seeking a 10-year contract, the source told USA Today".

LOL! Ok, Albert.

Hed be worth every penny and every year. The guy is a living legend who in a bad year for him throws up great numbers if mortals were throwing them up.

Yeah, seriously Albert, nobody in the history of baseball has received a 10-year contract. In fact, throughout all of professional sports there has never been anything even resembling a 10-year contract. All-Star, more like All-Delusions-Of-Grandeur. Pshaw.

He is going to be 32. Give me Prince all day over him.

While I fear Sandberg may eventually come back here, I do like 2 things about this story. 1, it's from a source close to Sandberg, which tells me his agent is begging somebody to hire the guy. And 2, his current boss seems to be signaling to everybody else in baseball that he'd be happy if they hired him away from their team.

Yes, yes, taking a minor league team to the playoffs is some sort of accomplishment that the Mike Quade's of the world could never dream of achieving.

Pat Gillick knows a thing or three about baseball and he basically hired him. Hmm, pretty strong endorsement to me.

So what? You seem to thing after one year they want him gone, which is a joke after what he did with that bunch. He has also been linked to the big league job once Charlie retires, but Charlie is staying on a few more years now.

There have been 9 contracts in MLB history worst over $150 Million dollars:

ARod - 275

ARod - 252

Jeter - 189

Mauer - 184

Teixeira - 180

Sabathia - 161

Manny -160

Tulo - 158

Cabrera - 152

You can argue a few of them, but Mauer is the only one of those the team will really regret. When elite players get elite money, they typically continue to be elite players. When very good players get elite money, the results are not as good.

Albert Pujols is elite. If the Cubs can get him for 7-10 years around $200M they would be crazy not to do it.

I hope they don't want him gone. I hope they want to keep him away from Chicago. I hope Ricketts isn't dumb enough to push for Sandberg and the new GM is smart enough to find the much better candidates for the job.

Not to throw this off target but what about Dave Martinez (while on the subject of former cubs)? Him being the shadow of Joe down in TB merits looking into him more than Sandberg.

Also, I don't think Ricketts has implied he wants to avoid big contracts. I've alsways read his remarks to mean they want to build from within so that when they sign a free agent they are spending on the right guy. I think he wants to avoid huge contracts to players like Soriano. Even when he was a freee agent not many people thought Soriano was one of the top players in the game, he was just the best of a weak free agent class. I think that's what Ricketts wants to avoid.

He wants to be like Boston. Boston signs big money players.

Ok, so let me get this straight. So you say you hope a hall of fame baseball guy and an organization that has been a beast in the NL wants him enough to stay with them, which to me is a ringing endorsement of Sandberg but he is not good enough to manage the Cubs?

Ok.

Sandberg has spent a grand total of, what, 5 years of managing in the minors? And absolute no experience coaching on the major league level? Let's stop talking about him like he's some managing dynamo who needs a shot right now.

And fans loving him is moot. People don't pay to come see managers. If the Cubs stink even Sandberg doing cartwheels on the dugout and peeing "23" into the grass isn't going to bring them out.

5 years is not enought time? And how can you get experience without getting a shot? What else does he need to do?

At least work as a bench coach or hitting instructor or something first. I'd still want him to spend a few more years managing in the minors before that.

Philly has been a beast for the better part of a decade. Hopefully Sandberg plays a part in tearing them back down to their prior aggressively mediocre ways.

I always really liked Martinez. No idea what type of coach he is, but I don't think that's a horrible idea. It would be funny to see the Ryno sycophants go nuts after a different ex-cub gets the gig.

That isn't the impression I have gotten, but it would be a much better theory if true. Desperation contracts to second tier guys is what you want to avoid. Record setting contracts to the best of the best is worthwhile.

I've heard a lot of "building from within" I think that's getting misinterpreted as "Ricketts won't spend on FAs" He's made mention on numerous occassions about how when talking to fans they keep mentioning certain free agent first basemen as who they should go for. Seems dumb for him to even mention that if he wasn't going to allow the new GM to chase them.

The Cubs have never and will never invest 200M on one player, nor should they. Pujols will breakdown midway through whatever ridiculous contract he gets.

The Cubs have a fairly long history of giving out the biggest or among the biggest contracts in baseball. Going back to Sandberg they made him the highest paid player in the game. They were prepared to make Hampton the highest paid player before giving the huge money to Sosa. Since then they have gone huge on Soriano and Zambrano. The specific $200m number is a pointless fact, since there haven't been too many of those guys to pretend the Cubs have a fear of doing such things.

Well, Pujols will command that and has already turned down the Cardinals. And people seem to forget that he will be 32 before next season even begins. I will take Prince at a smaller price.

So, I guess that means only the Rangers or Yankees have a shot at him, since only they have ever doled out the arbitrary amount of $200M.

I was going to say, one way to make sure Sandberg wouldn't come back to the Cubs would be to hire Dave Martinez.

Without looking it up, can you name the managers of the Tennessee Smokies or Daytona Cubs? Me neither.
