who led their Class AAA Lehigh Valley affiliate to its first winning record and the International League playoffs in his first year back with his original organization, according to the Phillies’ website.

Sandberg, a favorite of the Ricketts ownership, is open to a return to the Cubs because general manager Jim Hendry — who hired Mike Quade over Sandberg last fall — was fired, according to a source close to Sandberg.

This annoys me. Unless "reconciliation" means Sandberg apologizing profusely for storming off like a spoiled brat who wasn't bought the toy he wanted.

And at this point I really don't want him working as a coach anywhere in the organization, because as soon as (and every time) the new manager goes through a bad stretch that's all you're going to hear about.

The fact that Sandberg has an ax to grind with Hendry really reflects poorly on him (Sandberg).

If nothing else, Hendry was universally viewed as a good guy.

The ideal big "PR moves" this offseason are first hiring the right GM, signing the right FA and then letting that person hire the management/coaching staff THEY want. If they actually want Sandberg, ech, that's bad enough, but if Sandberg is effectively being forced onto whoever is hired by the Ricketts then that's no good. What the Sox are doing is completely irrelevant in this.

I think signing Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder would be a better PR move, and it would also make the team better.

Or both. However, no way Ricketts is shelling out over 200M for Pujols. We will be lucky to land Prince. And the fact Ryno keeps winning in the minors (Here and Philly) only will add fuel to this fire.

Both meaning Sandberg and either Prince or Pujols.

Signing Ryne [expletive] Sandberg over Pujols or Fielder and acting like that's some kind of good move is insanity.

Well, this may be true. However, Ricketts is a business man and a Cubs fan to boot. He loves Sandberg and he knows the fans love him. He has an angry fan base and he knows a move like this will appease 80% of them. Add Prince to this and he sells out every game.

How many times does Ricketts have to state the new GM will make these decisions? Sandberg may come back but there is little reason to assume the new GM is going to turn down better options to make fans feel all warm and fuzzy. I am still more concerned about getting better on the field than in the dugout.

Signing a manager, even Sandberg, isn't going to be enough to bring people to the game. Managers can't make a team win. Good players and winning games are what bring the most people out. You want a good GM to bring in and develop good players. Telling your GM who they have to hire as manager isn't a smart way to bring in a good GM.

Well, lets not forget who else has been rumored to join the Cubs from the Phillies organization. The dots seem to be getting connected here.

If you're going to hire a guy as a PR move, you don't hire him as a manager, you hire him as a special assistant or ambassador.

Not really.

I agree. However, go to a Cubs convention, mention Sandberg's name and see the reaction. He is absolutely loved here. Ricketts knows this and Ryno has won in the minors over and over again.

Sandberg has spent a grand total of, what, 5 years of managing in the minors? And absolute no experience coaching on the major league level? Let's stop talking about him like he's some managing dynamo who needs a shot right now.

And fans loving him is moot. People don't pay to come see managers. If the Cubs stink even Sandberg doing cartwheels on the dugout and peeing "23" into the grass isn't going to bring them out.

5 years is not enought time? And how can you get experience without getting a shot? What else does he need to do?

Erase the last several years worth of old timey baseball things he has said.
