How many times does Ricketts have to state the new GM will make these decisions? Sandberg may come back but there is little reason to assume the new GM is going to turn down better options to make fans feel all warm and fuzzy. I am still more concerned about getting better on the field than in the dugout.

Well, lets not forget who else has been rumored to join the Cubs from the Phillies organization. The dots seem to be getting connected here.

And we all saw how true those rumors turned out to be.

Gillick would be joining the Cubs after the season if it happens.

Then why did he resign mid-season? Why did he say he would not take a GM job? And why did Ricketts say the new GM would be reporting directly to him?

No, that rumor is dead.

Signing Ryne [expletive] Sandberg over Pujols or Fielder and acting like that's some kind of good move is insanity.

Well, this may be true. However, Ricketts is a business man and a Cubs fan to boot. He loves Sandberg and he knows the fans love him. He has an angry fan base and he knows a move like this will appease 80% of them. Add Prince to this and he sells out every game.

Signing a manager, even Sandberg, isn't going to be enough to bring people to the game. Managers can't make a team win. Good players and winning games are what bring the most people out. You want a good GM to bring in and develop good players. Telling your GM who they have to hire as manager isn't a smart way to bring in a good GM.

I agree. However, go to a Cubs convention, mention Sandberg's name and see the reaction. He is absolutely loved here. Ricketts knows this and Ryno has won in the minors over and over again.

71-68

60-78

71-69

That was Sandberg's record his first 3 years in the minors. He's had very good teams the last couple years, but his teams have not won over and over again. He's had 2 very good teams, 1 very bad team, and two mediocre teams.

From Phil Rogers:

Sandberg, whom Hall of Fame executive Pat Gillick vetted for the job, drew effusive praise from Phillies' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. for his work.

Sandberg has managed five minor league seasons, and delivered only one losing record in his four with the Cubs. He took Double-A Tennessee to the Southern League championship series in 2009 and went 82-62 with Triple-A Iowa in 2010.

Some in Philadelphia believe he's a likely successor to Charlie Manuel as the Phillies' manager — just as many in Chicago thought he would get the job that went to Mike Quade last fall. But Manuel plans to manage at least another two years, and Amaro expects a major league team to nab Sandberg before then.

"Ryne has been outstanding,'' he said. "It's hard for me to find enough superlatives when I talk about what he has done there. … He's a Hall of Famer who doesn't act like a Hall of Famer.

"I think he understands the importance of what he has done in the game. I also think he's very humble about it. The players really liked and enjoyed playing for him. They were motivated to play for him.''

Are people talking about Gillick or Lamar?

Bah, I got the two confused. Scratch that first question then, the point still remains.

I think signing Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder would be a better PR move, and it would also make the team better.

Or both. However, no way Ricketts is shelling out over 200M for Pujols. We will be lucky to land Prince.

Where do people keep getting this from?

More from the Rogers article:

One of the minor leagues' worst teams the last three years, the Phillies' Triple-A team won 22 more games in 2011 than '10 and then beat the Pawtucket Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs before the Columbus Clippers eliminated them Friday night.

Ricketts has sent out signals that he's not very interested in spending big on any one player and would prefer to build from within while spreading the money around. Of course that could be a smoke screen. But if you add those signals into the fact that it will be really hard to get either guy even if you do want him, I think the odds are the Cubs don't do it. But hopefully he's just laying in the weeds for negotiating purposes.

I've heard a lot of "building from within" I think that's getting misinterpreted as "Ricketts won't spend on FAs" He's made mention on numerous occassions about how when talking to fans they keep mentioning certain free agent first basemen as who they should go for. Seems dumb for him to even mention that if he wasn't going to allow the new GM to chase them.

The Cubs have never and will never invest 200M on one player, nor should they. Pujols will breakdown midway through whatever ridiculous contract he gets.

Oh, I don't recall hearing that.

I've interpreted the words I've heard to indicate he doesn't want THE BIG NAME but would prefer something more conservative.

I do have to think that the eating of contracts for Bradley/Silva, potentially Zambrano and maybe eventually Soriano is starting to wear thin on the guy. He's also eating Hendry's and Quade's contracts this offseason while bringing in a new GM and likely an entirely new coaching staff.

The Cubs have a fairly long history of giving out the biggest or among the biggest contracts in baseball. Going back to Sandberg they made him the highest paid player in the game. They were prepared to make Hampton the highest paid player before giving the huge money to Sosa. Since then they have gone huge on Soriano and Zambrano. The specific $200m number is a pointless fact, since there haven't been too many of those guys to pretend the Cubs have a fear of doing such things.

Well, Pujols will command that and has already turned down the Cardinals. And people seem to forget that he will be 32 before next season even begins. I will take Prince at a smaller price.

So what? Just because he will get that number and the Cubs have never given anybody else that number does not mean the Cubs will steer clear.

This annoys me. Unless "reconciliation" means Sandberg apologizing profusely for storming off like a spoiled brat who wasn't bought the toy he wanted.

And at this point I really don't want him working as a coach anywhere in the organization, because as soon as (and every time) the new manager goes through a bad stretch that's all you're going to hear about.

+1

Plus he went PUBLIC with his complaints. As far as the Cubs job is concerned right now he can go screw somewhere. Theres more worthy candidates.

"The veteran all-star is seeking a 10-year contract, the source told USA Today".

LOL! Ok, Albert.

Yeah, seriously Albert, nobody in the history of baseball has received a 10-year contract. In fact, throughout all of professional sports there has never been anything even resembling a 10-year contract. All-Star, more like All-Delusions-Of-Grandeur. Pshaw.
