I could accept a Theo GM/Sandberg managed team. I don't think it would happen as I don't think Ryne would be the type to fit into a more analytical (i.e., numbers oriented) organization. I don't think it's any coincidence that he hooked up with the Phillies.

Give Ryno is chance. He's paid his dues and knows the game inside and out.

Give Quade a chance. He's paid his dues and knows the game inside and out.

I never wanted Quade. And the fact they gave him the job based on a meaningless September run is/was a joke.

Is it better to give Ryno the job simply because he was a really great player and a lot of people like him? If you take away the name and consider a man who's been a minor league coach for 5 years total and compiled a 364-341-1 record, is that a guy you're really clamoring for?

Hasn't it always been more or less accepted, if not rumored, that very few people actually like Ryne Sandberg? Lots of fans loved the player. But I think lots of people do not like the guy. Considering how often he's gotten himself thrown out of games, and how much he seemed to wear out his welcome with Hendry, who accepted anybody and everybody, plus his reputation as a player for being prickly, I'm not sure he has the social ability to get 25 major league baseball players to deal with him for 8+ months in a row.

I am clamoring for a guy that will not put up with the circus atmosphere players have created here. There is also zero chance Ryno gets on the podium after a game and refers to players with cute names such as: "Wellsie, Marms, Byrdsie etc. when they are getting whipped every day.

He understands the game, knows how to teach and just so happens to be a hall of famer. He also will not condone bad baseball and chalk it up as: "We'll get em next time". He will correct it if he sees it.

I don't know how well he really understands the game if he thinks bunting with the #3 hitter is a good idea.

In fact, that would seem to indicate to me that he really misunderstands the game.

Oh, I see. Players who have hall of fame careers, take bad minor league teams to the playoffs and have the backing of hall of famers such as Pat Gillick misunderstand the game because they bunt in the minors.

He not only has condoned bad baseball, he's espoused it to whomever would listen.

Anyone who would be under consideration for the job would "understand the game" and "know how to teach", although very little teaching is done by the manager.

I do think that Quade let the inmates run the asylum, to a degree, but he was also quick to jump on the rookies and Castro. He gave the vets a pass, and was spanked good by the starting pitchers not name Zambrano. But thats Quade, and his managing style bears no relation to what Sandberg would or would not do. In other words, Quade's unfitness to manage has nothing to do with Sandberg. Quade might need to be fired, but Sandberg doesn't automatically need to be hired.

I think going back to the original post, reconciliation may mean Sandberg comes to the Cubs Convention.

Hall of Fame career = irrelevant

Pat Gillick paying him lip service so that he might get a job with another team doesn't do much for me, either.

I'm citing an actual managerial move he has made more than once (one that is basically one of the most egregious mistakes a manager can make), you're citing anecdotal crap.

How do you define a bad minor league team? Minor league teams are almost by definition different from year to year and many times from month to month as promotions and demotions change things.

Really? But a guy like Hendry who felt Ryno wasn't ready is truth? Gillick>Hendry.

Check out the Phillies minor league team he guided to the playoffs this year and check how horrendous they've been prior to that. It's called buying what the manager is selling.

He didn't manage a group of young prospects that lost at every level prior to AAA. There's like 5 guys on that team that got meaningful playing time under the age of 27. 2 of the top 8 hitters in PA were in the Philadelphia organization last year, and 2 of the 6 guys who made 10+ starts were in the Phillies organization last year.

Philly fans want him to replace Manuel as well.

http://philliesnation.com/archives/2011/09/keeping-sandberg-a-must-for-phillies-organization/

"Ryne Sandberg, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs manager, and now a part of the coaching staff of the Phillies until their run ends, is likely to become a coveted managerial candidate this offseason. And if not this winter, then likely in the very near future beyond that. It’s a problem because he would slide nicely onto Manuel’s stool in the dugout if Manuel were to decide to step away from the game after 2013. At age 71, it might be time for Uncle Cholly to hang ‘em up. At that point – especially if they win a title or two in the next couple of seasons – he’ll have nothing left to prove.

Sandberg himself really has nothing left to prove, either, which is why he’ll be a wanted man by many different teams quite soon. In 2010, Sandberg was the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year with the Iowa Cubs, their Triple-A affiliate. He has succeeded at every level of the minors. All that’s left is to taste the majors once again".

I thought it was a terrible idea before that blog post, but now... God. A Phillies blog has changed my mind.

And you're 200% wrong. So, because I think Ryno should be manager and you don't makes me a troll? Well done.

Or that Sandberg has done all he needs to do to get his shot.

No. Because you keep saying things like "He's paid his dues" and "It's called buying what the manager is selling."

Not to mention citing his hall of fame career as a reason he is qualified to be a manager.
