Honestly, I don't see the NFC as that strong, and the Bears will have played arguably 3 of their toughest 4 games by next week.

Yeah but they still have Philly (who knows if they get their [expletive] together by then), San Diego, Oakland (now tough because we cant stop the run), and 1 more against Detroit and Green Bay. The schedule is pretty tough this year.

Philly is in Philly, but the Bears are coming off of a bye week. Eagles coming off of a game vs. Dallas.

San Diego is in Chicago in late November, should be a factor

Oakland will be tough, but you never know what you're going to get out of them (or the Bears really). They could come out and play well or lay an egg.

2nd Detroit game is also at home.

Tampa is in a neutral site that should be a more pro-Bears crowd.

The Bears should win Minnesota x 2, KC, Seattle, and Denver. Like to think they can take 1/2 of the other 6 (including MNF at Detroit).

Despite how bad Minnesota has been, I have a hard time chalking up a gimme victory in the Metrodome when the Bears have won there once in the last 10 seasons, including seasons where the Vikings were bad.

Here's an interesting thought: let's just assume for a second the top 3 teams in the NFC are Green Bay, New Orleans and Detroit. Who's the 4th best team?

Here's the teams to choose from: San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Philly, Dallas, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Carolina, Chicago, Arizona, Seattle, St. Louis, and Minnesota.

I personally love Tampa Bay. Have since mid-2010.

Yes, but that stat leaves out that the Bears dominated the Vikings in Minnesota last year, though not in the dome. Not to mention they blew them out both games, including 1 with Favre playing. That stat leaves out that one of those losses was after the Bears already clinched the division in 2005. All the other years, the Bears were a clearly inferior team to the Vikings. That's not the case this year.

The Giants, Niners and Skins are 3-1 and have looked terrible doing it for the most part. The last 4 are clearly not in the conversation, along with Carolina. And the Bears beat Atlanta already pretty convincingly.

Despite the 200+ rushing yards would you consider this another disappointing offensive performance?

Looking at the totals they produced 20 points, and of them 7 came on a drive that started at around the Panthers 35 yard line after Hesters return and 7 came from the drive at the end of the game that started at the Panthers 40 and most of those yards came on the Forte run to the 2. Other than that there was the opening drive FG and a FG drive midway through the 4th. What's missing were long sustained TD drives.

The Bears came into the game leading the league in 3 and outs. You know how many they had today? 0

The Bears took advantage of good field position, but they also got the ball at or inside their own 25 in 5 of their 9 drives. They got a FG out of one of those drives. The next 3 times they did move the ball past their own 40 and changed field position starting Carolina at their own 8 and 7 in consecutive drives. The 5th time was the Cutler INT, and a good throw there would have changed field position again.

So Chris Spencer broke his hand today. He was able to come back and finish the game today, but I can't see him playing for a couple of weeks. We have major issues with the line (more than we usually do even) if Carimi cannot play next week. Suh is going to eat us alive.

I think it was a disappointing performance in general. Without the deflected pick 6 and the returns, they lose the game. My disappointment is primarily directed at the defense, though. They were horrible.

I don't get that logic. If you take away the deflected pick sixes and return TDs, the Bears haven't won many games in the last decade.

I think his point was that if you give up 550 yards on defense and score 20 points on offense you will probably lose most weeks.

Think of all that happened to keep the Panthers from winning

-A blocked kick on a 30 yard FGA

-A touchdown that came back because of a questionable penalty on Shockey

-A penalty that costs the Panthers a FG as the kick went about 3 feet short of going through

The Panthers left a lot of points on the field, which you'd probably expect if you give up 550 yards and only score 29 points.

Sure, but the Bears have made a living on defensive scores and having the best returner in NFL history for awhile now. It's not new, it's how they win.

I mean they won a game on MNF when Rex Grossman had six turnovers for fucks sake. This isn't new. They win a lot of games they probably shouldn't because of their D and ST.

at this point, with the Dolphins tanking and going to fire their coach, I would love to see the bears trade em a #2 or #3 for Brandon Marshall.

give them a 2 and a 3. its not like Jerry knows what to do with them

Exactly.

The defense has to be better than that to be a contender.

Yes, they've made a good living off return yards, but the new kickoff rule kills them. So you can't rely on that anymore. Punt returns are far more difficult that kickoffs. With good punters who kick it high and far, not even Hester can return it consistently.

The return of the running game is promising, but the Panthers easily outperformed them outside of the kicking game. And as improved as the Panthers are, the Bears were lucky to win.

Yeah, the real issue is 3 straight stinkers by the defense. Safety play is atrocious right now. Guys like Tillman, Idonije, and Adams seem to be just going thru the motions at this point. It's also concerning that holding Julius Peppers has not only become legal but seems to be encouraged at this point.

But a win is a win. The Bears won 12 times last year and only the 2 Minnesota games are games you can consider that they played very well in all 3 phases.

hopefully we get harris back by next week, and why don't we just send a mix tape of unflagged holds on peppers to the league office?

without the blown PI call and the ghost hold on the punt return, we may have beaten the packers. if sanzenbacher makes a simply catch on 3rd down, we're in the new orleans game. detroit got 2 pick 6's against the cowboys. that's football.

What a brutally ugly performance by everybody but Forte and Hester. The optimist in me thinks that was a purposefully stupid game plan so as to not show anybody anything to have on tape. The defense was awful. Although I've felt for a long time they stand no chance of stopping an offense that tries to throw the ball. Luckily Rivera is as big a coward as Lovie or Carolina may have pulled off the upset.
