No one is gonna give him 20 a year. Except maybe the Yankees if they're desperate. But after Igawa and Irabu backfired for them, I can't see them throwing that much dough.

You have to think the Old Man's hatred for Irabu colored their approach to that market in the following years, but now that he's long gone, who knows how they will view it.

No, I would think we would rather use 50 million to maybe get a few players rather than pay that amount to "talk" to a guy about giving him another 20mil a year. it seems like we could find a lot better use for the money.

If you don't sign him, the posting fee never gets paid.

If this guy is as quirky as has been reported a few times, his demand of 20 mill plus per season makes sense. His dad supposedly said he wouldn't even make his mind up to be posted until mid January. What changed there? My honest guess is he doesn't really want to come over this year. but IF a team paid him THAT much, he would anyway.

If this isn't the case, try to win the posting fee, feel him out as to what his demands are and if you feel like he's almost unsignable, go ahead and spend on other things. Come back to him right before the time limit, offer him a Daisuke deal and if he accepts, then great, if not, let him walk.

Yeah this is starting to look like a (rare) case where winning bidder won't be able to reach an agreement with the player, and the guy will end up staying in Japan.

If he's even remotely serious about that $20M number, that is.

If the cobs don't win the darvish posting and pay him pujols money I'm going to be pissed. We are a big market team. Also I can't wait for 15 mill per for Cespedes.

Start throwing around silly money around like the madoff mets.

That's the way to prove you are big market.

szj somehow brings the winning combination of not serious and not funny to literally every one of his posts.

The Madoff Mets are cutting payroll by like $30m so I hope that doesn't happen.

Now they're just the Mets. When they were the Madoff Mets they were spending some major coin.

They were basically right there with the Cubs.

we should have done more of this last year. we finished with the 4th worst record in baseball. why spend 300mil to be what 10th worst? Why would we spend 50 mil to sign an unknown for any large amount? we have way to many needs to waste money. of course part of it is some you are happy spending make believe money that isn't yours!

Yea. An unknown. Except they know a lot about Yu Darvish. Hence teams lining up to pay him tens of millions of dollars.

Darvish or his Iranian dad once said that Darvish would only play for the Yankees. My guess is if the Yanks bid they will get him.

Yu nor his dad has any say on where he plays (well I guess they can decide between the winning bidder or going back to Japan)

I'm assuming this has been addressed at one point but if a team pays the posting fee but can't reach a contract with the player to they lose that money anyway?

No. If they can't reach a contract, they don't have to pay.

The posting fee is only paid if the team reaches a contract with the player.

And it's worth noting that Matsuzaka was rumored to be looking for something like 5/100 back when he was posted (and the winning bid was assumed to be closer to 25-30 million than the 50+ it ended up being).

Gotcha. On one hand, Darvish seems more highly touted than Daisuke, but on the other hand, while not as colossal a failure as some consider him his overall mediocrity could be what scares teams away from a massive posting fee and contract.

i'm sure that he's quite talented, but i'm just really reluctant to shell out what will amount to like $20m/year (posting fee + contract) for a guy who hasn't pitched in the major leagues. how many free agent pitchers have $20m/year contracts? the ones i can think of off the top of my head are sabathia, cliff lee, halladay and johan santana. considering that no japanese pitcher has come over and been anywhere near as good as those guys, i don't see how you could have any confidence that you'd get enough value for what you're paying.

Matsuzaka was a 4-WAR pitcher his first year with the Red Sox and a 3.3 WAR pitcher in 167 innings his second year. That's pretty good.

ERAs their last five seasons in Japan

Matsuzaka

3.68, 2.83, 2.90, 2.30, 2.13

Darvish

1.82, 1.88, 1.73, 1.78, 1.44

I have no problem thinking Darvish can be a 5-6 fWAR pitcher immediately.

But he has had more success and at a younger age than any of his predecessors. That alone should make him more valuable than any of the other Japanese pitching imports. If he can outperform DiceK's first year numbers in the US by the same margin he was outperforming them in Japan, and he can stay healthy, he is going to be a helluva pitcher that is still young.

He'll also be 2 years younger than Daisuke when posted. He could potentially be a steal at 5/100.
