ESPN had a "if you could start your team with one guy who would it be?" mock draft today. Starlin went 9th (picked by Aaron Boone).

Why Boone picked Castro: "A 22-year-old shortstop already coming off a 200-hit season. I think the power will come soon, along with improved defense. I think .320, with 20-plus HRs, 90-plus RBIs and runs and 30-plus SBs will become his norm over the next decade.”

In the accompanying chat, Kevin Goldstein had this to say: I agree with everything Aaron says about Castro offensively. Defense, not so much. I predict he'll be a third baseman during the last half of this ten year period, and the stolen bases will dwindle.

I thought that was interesting given the variety of opinions on his defensive development.

And Sutcliffe picked Shark at #26.

what the hell

Shark was one of the biggest stretch picks of the event, but there were two "fan picks" of a reliever (Chapman) and a utility player (Steve Lombardozzi?) that make the Shark pick look defensible. I believe the fan was Jim Hendry.

he's a fairly young starting pitcher with a high k/9. i wouldn't have picked him, but it's not indefensible.

the most ridiculous pick was chapman. what kind of meatball picks a reliever to anchor their team?

to be fair, he's going to be a starter. Unless the Reds continue to be morons.

I really dig the SABR stats on the hitting side of things. I'm not totally onboard with the defensive stats (mostly due to my ignorance of them) so I'm still an old school guy who bases my thoughts on a defender on what I see. . . . . .. that being said, I'm enjoying the heck out of Castro's play at SS the last 3-4 weeks. He's playing with a lot of confidence.

have you looked at this peripherals this year? i don't know if he can continue to keep walks so low, but he is pretty much off the charts right now.

Sutcliffe is a total meathead Cub fanboy. I [expletive] love him.

Theo and Jed are playing it right. No one is untouchable. You see what level of interest is there for Castro and you evaluate what you can get back in return. Seems better than the old regime who had untouchables and wouldn't listen about moving them. Admittedly it would take a strong offer, but you listen.

I just don't get this. He has brain-cramp for the first time this season, and now he has to be benched for the latest in "a series of mental gaffes"

Help.

This wasn't exactly his first mental gaff this year though. Stopped running on the attempted steal on Friday, didn't run out the swinging bunt in Pittsburgh. I don't really agree with how Dale handled this but hopefully this it stops at the threaten part and doesn't actually turn into a benching.

It's not his first brain cramp. It really won't hurt anything to bench him for a game in a meaningless season to make sure he doesn't forget how many outs there are in the future.

He sounded as though he meant more than one game. Could just be the media fanning the flames though.

 Having Starlin sit a game wouldn't be the worst thing. I read somewhere (hell, maybe upthread) that he's one of only like 6 players to have played in every inning this year.

i hope Paul Sullivan gets butt cancer

I hate the headline writer even more. Lots of things could've been said that would've actually been true. "Lapse costs Cubs" isn't one of them.

Oh, and if you want to be pissed off at how stupid people are, read the comments on that article.

Yeah, he probably should have an off day regardless of this issue. He's been pretty bad at the plate lately. If they do give him a day off, or benching, or whatever you want to call it I hope they tie it into an off day (either day coming off of, or going into) so he essentially has 2 days off.

Castro's shortcomings are definitely more mental than physical, and he's had multiple instances where he's made simple mistakes that shouldn't be made. While making these shortcomings a character flaw like the media will(rather than addressing it as you would Darwin Barney getting physically run down last year) would be a mistake, it's still something that you want to fix. I don't think it's short-leashed of them to be nearing a disciplinary point with it considering Castro's penchant for these goofs. The rub is all in how that's implemented, and I don't see any reason to think it won't be handled in the proper manner given the parties involved. Sveum is well respected by the players while still conveying some blunt truths at times, and Castro for his part appears very repentant about the issue. Regardless of how you want to spin Sveum's quotes in either direction, it seems apparent that Castro is going to sit if he makes a dumb mistake like that again. That can still be done the wrong way, but I think communicating that threat/reality to Starlin(who clearly doesn't want to leave the field, nor make these mistakes any more) could be an effective way of getting him to focus.

I didn't see any. I'm no Sullivan fan but in this case Sveum is really the source of the story, rather than an opinion piece.

Dale looks tired -- like he's been up lots of nights without much sleep.
