Sorry Jake, but Kevin Correia should not be an All Star ahead of Tommy Hanson.

Especially if the game decides home field for the World's Series.

There's been so many people drop out it hardly feels like a true all star game anyway.

I get that injuries happen and stuff, but with everything that's gone on, I'm not sure how we're expected to take any of this seriously.

Scott Rolen and his .680 OPS will be starting at third base for the NL. Jon Lester was named as an AL All-Star to replace a Sunday pitcher and was then himself replaced because he's on the DL right now. The NL starting third baseman and the reserve third baseman both get hurt and the one NL third baseman actually deserving of a spot doesn't go because he was contacted too late.

I realize there are procedures that they have to follow in naming replacements due to the player balloting and fan balloting and all that, but at what point does MLB step back and realize the clusterscrew they're heading towards, if they haven't already arrived at it in full?

Two heavy-handed ideas that will never get past the union but would cause players to think twice:

- If a player declines due to phantom injury or just doesn't want to, the team plays short. No substitutions for anything other than Sunday pitchers and legitimite injuries.

- Players must attend All-Star Game to receive any contract incentives.

If a player misses the all star game due to injury, the player must miss at least 2 consecutive games following the all star game (waived if they missed the last 2 games before the all star game)

Just a thought.

Wow the new AL starting pitchers look odd

SP Josh Beckett

SP Gio Gonzalez

SP Alexi Ogando (replacing CC Sabathia)

SP Michael Pineda (replacing Justin Verlander)

SP Ricky Romero (replacing Jon Lester)

SP C.J. Wilson

on the bright side, all the drop outs allowed the best outfielder in the national league to play in the all star game

Castro will be the starting SS for the NL right?

Tulo probably figures to start. However, Reyes was replaced by Sandoval, leaving Starlin as the only other shortstop on the NL roster, so it's all Starlin once Tulo gets pulled.

Watching Sandoval try and play shortstop would be kinda fun, though.

As Cubs fans we don't need to worry about that.

The amount of players that have been replaced is getting ridiculous. 3 Pirates? Rolen and yet got Ramirez (yes, I know number of votes BS or whatever)... if you're going to have this mess, you can't have the game mean anything. What an embarrassment for MLB.

Make it 84. Somebody I've never heard of just got added. Tyler Clippard?

I haven't really been following it, but wasn't he an original selection? I could've sworn I saw he made it when I saw the TBS ticker last Sunday afternoon.

You've never heard of Tyler Clippard? Granted, he's not a household name, but he's been one of the best relievers in the NL for a couple years.

i find it mind-boggling that not only was a serious mvp candidate not chosen by the fans, but he wasn't selected as a reserve or as one of those final five either. wtf???

yeah i know middle relievers are pretty obscure, but ones that are consistently good should be known if you follow baseball at all.

He's got 240 innings spread over 5 seasons in the majors, as a middle reliever. There's no reason why somebody who follows baseball to know who he is.

I'm not sure why anybody would think anybody was expected to take an exhibition game seriously.

he pitched in like half his team's games last year. he's probably going to pitch in close to half of washington's games this year. if you're a fan of a national league team, then he's almost certainly faced your team multiple times each year during the past 2-3 years, and since he's one of the best setup men in baseball, it's very likely that he's faced your team in multiple high-leverage situations during that time.

plus if you play fantasy baseball in a league with any depth, he should definitely be owned by someone in your league.

there are two reasons that "somebody who follows baseball [should] know who he is"

The vast majority of those innings have come in the past 3 years, and he's been very good. You probably wouldn't know who he is if you're a casual fan, but if you big enough into baseball to hang around message boards a lot you'd know who he is. Especially if you're a fan of an NL team.
