WASHINGTON -- The New York Yankees have three scouts watching the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs as they look for bullpen and hitting help. It appears the Yankees may have some interest in Cubs left-handed reliever John Grabow as well as hitters such as Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano.

The Cubs won't come close to replacing Ramirez, but it could be fun to see the Yankees trade for him just because that would mean Posada is getting shoved out the door and that drama would be hilarious.

The Yankees are one of very few teams (maybe the only one) who could conceivably pay a rather large chunk of Soriano's contract. If they'd pay, say, 75% or more what kind of prospects would people on here want in return?

If they'll take 75% of his contract, we should be sending them prospects.

i wouldn't trade Soto for Montero

If the Cubs are gonna host a firesale at the deadline and Soto's name is going to be on the block (hypothetically speaking) it might as well be in favor for someone like Montero

and why do they want 3 players that all present downgrades from what they've got?

This. I'm a bit perplexed by their interest in Soriano and Grabow. Aramis I might be able to understand, but Soriano and Grabow?

For whatever it's worth, Fangraphs' dollar value for Soriano last year was $12.2 million - 75% of his remaining contract would be $13.5 mil per year. With a horde of money and few high quality prospects (I think), the Yankees might be willing to chip in more cash than they should.

Isn't Posada their primary DH? If so, Aramis would be a pretty big improvement over his .738 OPS.

In addition to Posada being a bad DH, their non-Granderson OFs aren't doing much with the bat.

I'm really at the point where I'd like to see what it would take to hand on to Aramis for another year or 2. They can have Grabow for an autographed picture of Marianoo Rivera for all I care, but as for Soriano, unless were talking top prospects, I'd just want for them to take a significant chunk of his salary, but as much money as they have, they'll likely need to shell out more for Sabathia next year, and I'm sure that they will be very interested in Prine Fielder as a DH next year, so I don't know how much money they're looking to throw around here.

I might. I don't think Soto is a part of our next core, he's going to get more costly in the near future. Montero is an elite prospect. If we could get Montero for Soto, I'd have to think hard about it.

That said, don't see the Yankees moving for Soto anyways. They'll probably use Russ Martin as a bridge to Romine/Sanchez.

I'd take a PTBN if they ate a lot of Soriano's contract. That said, between Soriano through 2014 and Ramirez through 2012, I'd be rather surprised if they opted for the former. Even with the option vesting for Ramirez, I'd want some decent talent in return if a team came calling. Few teams can probably afford the move, but with so few impact bats available, I do wonder if a team will begrudgingly offer a decent deal for Aramis.

Are the Yankees trying to rise up the fecal league standings?

I guess I don't really see a point for the Yankees to acquire Soriano. If he was a lefty I guess I could see it.

Speaking of Soriano..... .257/.321/.365/.686 and somehow a .337 BABIP (which would be the highest of his career over a season) since May 2nd (45 games).

Because he had a good game on May 2nd. His BABIP before UM's timeframe was 242.

Judging by the amount of contenders getting weak production from 3B, such as the Indians, Tigers, and Phillies, I wonder how long before someone offers up a top prospect or 2 for him. They could view the 16 mil option as an incentive right about now, considering that its just a 1 year obligation as opposed to a 3-4 year for less annually. I really hope the Cubs make up their mind on what they plan on doing with him next year, because if they plan on letting him walk, Id much rather see what we could get, because he could suddenly become the summers top trade chip, assuming hed waive the NTC, which Id have to imagine he would to get off this sinking mess of a ship.

gardner is a terrific fielder and baserunner though... any cub OF would be a downgrade from him.

In all honesty, I'd begin any Aramis talks with Montero. We have no need to trade Aramis and should negotiate as such, I think. If we trade Aramis at the deadline, we won't have a productive third baseman next year (most likely replacements are DeWitt/Baker or Flaherty) in a year where we could contend. From the Yankees' perspective, they'd receive a significant upgrade at the DH spot and have him for the rest of this year and all of next year rather than just as a rental for a few months.

The Cubs have no incentive whatsoever to trade Aramis, so a team interested in him should give us that incentive. If the Yankees don't want to part with Montero, I'd be perfectly happy keeping Aramis through the deadline.
