Zych is a re-draft. BA's 50th best prospect overall. Cubs picked him in the 49th rd 3 years ago. ....

Good value, but not a SP.

Yes, I would say getting a 50th-best prospect at 129 could be very nice value, if BA knows anything. The kid will still be only 20 into August, so it's not like he's a college fossil with no time to get better.

Time to make a splash Cubs. This is usually about where the Cubs decide to go overslot too, right? Round 5-7ish or so.

high 80's guy with a decent breaking ball, IIRC. Feels like a pick where they believe he'll fill out, as I think he's a fairly skinny kid for his size. Seems like a decent enough pivk here.

5 picks, all 20 or younger.

Definitely not going for advanced older college players today, that's for sure.

Goes well with the fact that the Big League club isn't likely to contend for another 2 years. They're drafting for upside instead of a guy who could be up and very average in the next year or so.

From what I've read, the Cubs appear to be doing a decent job in the draft so far.

Does Hendry realize he's not coming from South Bend?

At this point, I'm wondering if Fisher and Maples are basically unsignable?

There has to be something, but I still want the Cubs to take the chance.

'08 I believe. If it's the same guy, Ping mentioned what a raging db his dad was.

They can't be doing that great if they havent drafted any cubans yet.

I prefer my Cubans illegally smuggled, not drafted.

BA's 6th best prospect in Arizona and 193rd best in the nation:

Tayler Scott, rhp

Notre Dame Prep HS, Scottsdale

Scott, who moved to the United States from South Africa three years ago, did not pitch at any major showcase events last summer, but he's popping up this spring in another down year for Arizona high school talent. He's a good athlete who is also a standout soccer player for Notre Dame Prep. Scott has a projectable 6-foot-2 frame and is committed to Arizona. His fastball sits in the 90-92 mph range, topping out at 93. He flashes an above-average breaking ball at times and he can throw the pitch for strikes, though it's mostly below-average now. Like most high school pitchers, Scott doesn't throw a changeup. He got roughed up during a couple of starts late in the year, but scouts still like his athleticism and projection.

That always surprises me. It was the first non fastball pitch I learned and was quite effective. I guess if you've got enough velocity to pop onto scouting radars there's no use for it in high school. That wasn't an issue with me.

You're right, '08. And that's the same guy.

Can't hurt to roll the dice on one or both of these guys in these earlyish rounds, especially considering Wilkens ability to pick out signable gems in the later rounds.

Well, that's better than I was thinking anyway. Wilken didn't go all Hunter Ackerman on us inside the top 5 rounds this year anyway.

Maybe we're planning on going pitching heavy thru IFA?

Figured we'd have already taken at least one and probably 2 starters at this stage.

I half wonder if the loaded pitching at XST had them leaning towards filling positional holes earlier. I mean, we do have a lot of intriguing arms in XST that are poised for shortseason ball.

System seems very reminiscent of the 2003 system in that way. Here's hoping more arms turn out than that group did.

Who we got with decent upside down there?

Because there's no compensation for unsigned picks after the 3rd round, I think most teams feel safer going with relatively more signable guys in the early rounds after the 3rd. The logic being that you'd hate to blow, say, a 4th rounder on a tough sign when there's still good talent out there you're more likely to sign.
