I'd like to see the traffic numbers for baseball message boards in general. The NFL sucks up most of the available oxygen, college football gets bigger every year, the NBA is as good as its ever been, hockey is less of a basket case these days, and soccer is staring to make some hay in the US.

There's a diminishing interest in the sport as a whole if you look at how many kids are taking it up.

Because playing baseball is too expensive for most families to afford these days. Too much pricey equipment and travel.

Baseball is trending down over the past 25 years, but it still ranks second only to the NFL in percentage of fans who consider it their favorite sport, according the Harris Poll. It's actually held steady over the past decade.

Wait, people were cut off from registering for over a year?

phpBB is not some kind of exotic [expletive]. Tim himself has had this board in pieces and back together again time after time, and we are to believe that an issue arose that couldn't be dealt with in a matter of days at most? An issue critical to the site's continuation?

What happened to the site? We didn't need 10 pages to answer the question.

I was referring to youth involvement.

Still think Pena sucks, if you don't agree I don't really care. I didn't read that thread again after I posted that because I knew what was coming after. You don't have to go on and on about your opinion and how much you value it after someone says something you disagree with. Other people posted their opinions I posted mine. There's no need to degrade someone's post because you think it's worthless, I thought most of the opinions in that thread were worthless but I didn't feel the need to go off on how worthless their posts were. It's why I avoid the baseball discussions thread for the most part these days. it's filled with egotistical know it alls. people really need to lighten up.

this stuff is just infuriating.

Yes. That happened when the site was hacked last year. Search and many of the moderators' tools weren't working either. A week or so ago Tim upgraded to the latest edition of PhpBB and that fixed the problems.

What the [expletive]?!? That's crazy. Didn't you guys do any research to fix the issue? Why didn't you reach out to the user base to see if anyone has phpbb knowledge? There's ton of people out there who you could higher to fix the problem dirt cheap? That's maddening.

This is the truth about almost every sport. Although if someone chooses in the town I live they can play park district ball for less then $50 a year. All the games are in town. The only equipment they have to have is a glove(some kids play without cleats.) The down side is that one of those kids will probably make the All-Star team. To play All-Stars it would be hard to do without having at least your own bat and cleats. Most parents of All-Star players will not allow other kids to use their kids bats. If you ever had to pay for one you would certainly understand why.

There had been some mention of the problems, I believe mainly in the Site Suggestions forum. I believe at least the search and new member registration problems were mentioned.

Well, that solves that question. Good Lord.

Maybe people should just be prepared to argue their opinions.

And toughen up. It's a message board for Christ's sake. Some smartass hundreds of miles away calls you a moron and you fall all to pieces? Don't think there's anyway for Tim's bunch to fix that.

All this talk about how nobody cares about the Cubs right now has made me actually feel like paying attention to them for the first time in awhile. Contrarianism FTW.

I could get behind a total blow-up and overhaul. Sell the snot out of it at the trade deadline. Soeak up the high draft pick next year.

Yeah - I was perplexed for a long time. I did two complete reinstalls of the system during the past year without any success fixing the problems. I had even enlisted the help of my ISP at one point to see if there were something left behind during one of the hack attacks we've suffered.

I know phpbb isn't some arcane system - I've installed quite a few boards over the years for myself and others over the years.

It still isn't working the way that I'd like, but I've isolated the problem to the interaction of the board with the joomla system on the front end of the site. Since I'm not currently putting anything into that part of the site, I am just running without any integration between the two right now, which has addressed the issue for the time being. Perhaps when I get around to upgrading that to j1.6 I can get them tied together again.

As for the concerns about monetizing the site goes, I can certainly understand the point of view. When I started NSBB, I was, well, let's just call it underemployed. Not to mention I had just separated from my ex and wasn't in any kind of relationship. Despite the influx of people from cubs.com and espn.com, I was able to provide around 33% of the traffic on my own. There were always new topics because I made sure there were. I used the "view unanswered posts" feature to make sure that everyone who started a thread got rewarded with at least one response.

However, it wasn't really my other side projects that took me away from here as much as real life. I now get paid full time by a Lean Mfg consulting company and have a thriving consulting business of my own. When I'm not on the road, I am single father to a 14 year old and a 16 year old to whom I'm highly devoted. Also, I started seeing a wonderful woman about 18 months ago and had her move in at the beginning of the year.

The other side projects (312sports (etc), jawdle, and so forth) have suffered far more than nsbb from my lack of attention. Oh, and considering my level of involvement and time, getting the credentials I've received to some very nice college sporting events has made it a personal success if not a commercial one. People talk as if I spent all my time on the message board there...where I accumulated 525 posts in a year and a half!

Just as an example of how I allocate my time, in the past two weeks I've been home for 1 day in 12. I've been in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Ireland for the rest of the time. I checked into NSBB every single day and managed to participate in a few discussions. Today was the first time I looked into any of the other sites and that was just to figure out how few posts I actually had on that message board.

Jawdle was probably a mistake, but my best friend of nearly 40 years asked me to do it with him and we had a blast working on the site while eating good pizza and drinking good wine & beer. We never did figure out how to differentiate the site from sporcle other than being better looking. As a result, the site died. [expletive] happens. It was a fun investment of time over a couple month period.

Finally - I appreciate the compliments I've gotten in this thread. I have certainly never been in this for the glory or notoriety. I have respect for Al and Julie and what they've been able to achieve. However, that's simply not my personality. I've had a lot of fun with NSBB over the years and consider quite a few people around here friends, though I've only met a few of you in person.

Why not just take the front page down? It'll be one less hassle for you.

It serves as a decent enough landing page for people visiting the site. I took off the articles just now so that the recently created topics in the forum are the highlighted content.

Plus those advertisers paid me for being on the front page. ;)

Just tell me who the sponsors are, and every day I'll make a post like "Yeah I just got back from Subway. Did you know it's only 400 calories? And it tastes great! You can have all the vegetables you want! SUBWAY."

that should take care of it
