There are teams looking for help, The Red Sox and Phillies to name a few that say they are unable to add payroll. We should be taking advantage of these situations are offering these teams Fukudome and Pena for some prospects and eating the rest of the salaries.

I don't know where the Red Sox would put Pena, unless they DH him or Gonzalez. He wouldn't go to Philly unless Ryan Howard would get some sort of season-ending injury.

David Ortiz is like the best hitter in baseball right now.

I have no idea why I forgot him. So no, barring injury Pena is not going either of those places.

I hear the Red Sox are going to play A Gon in the outfield so Ortiz can play 1st for interleague. Why not play A Gon in the outfield for a bit more if it works and trade for Pena?

With Victorino now on the DL I wonder if the Cubs could get Philly to trade for their former player, Byrd, to try and drum up some offense. Their corner OF has been bad this year and with Shane down all three spots are going to suck. Byrd could fill-in at CF and then help out on the corners, maybe.

I'd be interested to see what we could get for Byrd so shortly after his return from being hit in the face. If we did trade Byrd, however, I'd definitely be strongly in favor of bringing Kosuke back next year.

The Phillies have placed Placido Polanco on the DL, and there next in line for 3B is Wilson valdez and Pete Orr, both are awful with sub .250 avg/sub .600 OPS. While Aramis may be too rich for their blood, might I recommend Jeff Baker or Blake DeWitt? the Phils are coming to town after the Marlins leave, and that could be a good time to get something done.

I wouldn't assume Ramirez would be too rich for their blood. They are a the only team in a huge market and have built a consistent winner while raising their payroll. There is a significant amount of payroll coming off their books and some of their highest paid players are very replacable. They aren't in any sort of desperation situation, but they are very hungry for offense and are not getting it.

That was a very temporary solution.

I would mostly agree that Philly wouldn't turn their nose up immediately at the contract. After arbitration raises, they'll have around 30 million to play with next year in free agency. But that's with holes in left field, SS, at least one back end bullpen pitcher, and maybe a starter as well if they don't fill Oswalt's spot internally. I don't know if with that many holes they're going to want to spend 16 million on Ramirez with Polanco already under contract.

If Ramirez's option doesn't kick in when he's traded, they might be willing to take on some more payroll this year though. Their payroll is already the highest it's ever been (and adding Ramirez would probably make it the highest non-Yankees payroll in the history of baseball), but they might be willing to do that for a few months. I just don't know if they're willing to have Ramirez there in 2012 and sacrifice considerably elsewhere.

Buster Olney just tweated that the Pirates are snooping around for "veteran outfield" help that can provide some offense. Would be nice if the Bucs had some, you know, actual money or finances such that they could at least show interest in a Byrd, Sori, Fuku, etc.

They might not have the money, but they certainly have enough prospects to send over for Fukudome and make it worth our while to eat whats left of his salary.

I just traded Byrd and Dempster and an amazing pitching prospect I created for McCutchen in MLB: The Show 2010. McCutchen is now out for he rest of the year with an ACL something or other and Byrd is leading the NL in BA and all CF in OPS, HR and RBI. DAMN YOU, THE PIRATES.

I have no idea who this guy is, but he raises some interesting points regarding Sean Marshall.

But if the word that's been going around almost guarantees the Padres a Jonathan Singleton type prospect for Mike Adams, the Cubs should be able to snag someone similar, if not better. And damn, we're talking some kind of prospect.

When you have the chance to get an A-Ball first baseman that isn't even OPSing .800, how can you pass that up?

In fairness, BA ranked Singleton the 39th best prospect in baseball before 2011 and he's OPSd .835 and .872 the previous two years. He's also only 19.

Right, but it's a good illustration of several things that are wrong with the logic used.

First of all, he's assuming that Adams or Marshall would get a top 50 prospect in return. Maybe that's true, but treating it like it's a certainty that's just out there waiting to be taken is incorrect. Second, the likely return would be someone who is a good distance away from MLB. While trading for prospects isn't the end of the world, the Cubs are a large market team that can quite easily be competitive as soon as next year. To trade away strong MLB assets and get back a return that is years away from contributing is simply not a very good decision. On a related note, by getting a return that is so far away, you're dealing with far less certainty in getting that return from trading Marshall realized. And lastly, both Marshall and Adams figure to be worth at least Type B compensation and are extremely unlikely to accept any offer of arbitration. Is having Marshall for a year and a half worth the difference between their likely return and a 1st round pick they'd get for offering him arbitration? Probably, especially if the team has any ideas about contending.

I agree with all of that. Just pointing out that Singleton's been good prior to this year.

Who wrote the code for that game? When would Marlon Byrd ever lead the NL in homers? Does the Show place far too much emphasis on beefy biceps?

No, no, read it again; he leads the NL in BA. All the other categories he's just leading all other CF.

If the Cubs plan on competing next year, Id rather hold on to Marshall. However, if not, Id gladly trade him for this guy. Marshall could get expensive when the time comes, and we could have a solid future pen with guys like Carpenter, Dolis, Belivieu, and Rhoderick to name a few in addition to Marmol.

Nothing earth shattering, but...

Hendry Explains Deadline Approach

By Tim Dierkes [July 20 at 10:29am CST]

Cubs GM Jim Hendry aims to limit his trades to players he knows won't be returning next season, he told Rick Brown of the Des Moines Register. Hendry explained:

"Why would we trade anybody who we think is going to help us next year or the years after? I would say if we move anyone it would be somebody we clearly knew wouldn't be back. We're not going to move people that we think are going to help us. Why would I trade Sean Marshall? Why would I trade Darwin Barney? Those calls kind of stop quickly. It makes no sense."

The next logical question is which Cubs players clearly won't be back. Aramis Ramirez won't be accepting a trade, and Ryan Dempster has full no-trade rights as well. Kerry Wood probably has a say in whether he's dealt. That probably leaves Kosuke Fukudome, Carlos Pena, John Grabow, and Reed Johnson as the Cubs' main trade candidates. However, I'm guessing the Cubs haven't ruled out re-signing Pena, so he's not a lock to be dealt.

I think itsn officialt, Darwin Barney is the new Ryan Theriot, although the organization probably sees him as more of a Derek Jeter.
