Interesting that Sopel or Campoli's names really haven't been swirling around today. I'd still really like to see them address our center depth, unless they already had a conversation with Sharpie and he's comfortable being our center for 2011

They made a run at Max Talbot and even saw a rumor that the Hawks were front runners at one point but the Flyers swept in and got him with a 5 year deal.

Just reading about that. One of the guys I wanted was Ville Leino just signed 6 years 27m for Buffalo. Happy we didn't make that move if 4.5 was what it took

C: Toews, Bolland, FA, Johnson?

RW: Kane, Hossa, Frolik, Smith

LW: Sharp, Brunette, Olesz, Bickell

BN: Stalberg, Scott, Pasani

Just typing this up quickly. I'm sure I am missing critical names. If we could get a decent center to lead a line with Frolik and Olesz it will at least be interesting. Better than Stalberg, Kopz, Brouwer splitting time on that line most likely.

Hawks sign Dan Carcillo

Did not see that coming.

Hawks sign Dan Carcillo

I'll never forget the big hit he had in game 2 of the 2010 Cup finals... on Jeff Carter.

Didn't realize we were in need of goon depth.

he can play a little bit and definitely can get under opponents' skin. main thing with him is keeping his composure and not getting called for stupid penalties.

he's not a real high-skill guy but he's not a goon who will score 2 points in 80 games either.

Can we seriously say that the Hawks got better after the flurry of moves? I dont know....

I don't think they are any worse. And they're going to have some money available to make stuff happen during the year if they need to.

I think we're better and deeper for the most part. There are still names out there and the Hawks still have plenty of cap space as well.

Brouwer, Campbell, Kopetsky, Hendry, Stalberg? for Olesz, Montador, Brunette, Mayers, O'Donell and Carcillo

Brunette is an upgrade over Brouwer, although a short term one. Campbell is a big hit, but Montador is not a bad replacement (plus you'd expect improvement from Leddy in his 2nd year), and we acquired a lot of depth for the 3rd D-line and reserves. Campbell is better than any D we acquired, but the fact that we don't have to rely on someone like Hendry or Scott is big. Those lines were the ones that killed us last year. Olesz has the upside to be better than Kopetsky and is probably better than Stalberg (if he does leave).

And we have something like 7 million left in cap space. Are we better than the Hawks of 2 years ago? Not even close. But we're definitely better than last year's team at this point and have a chance to improve ether this offseason or at the deadline.

ESPN named Panthers and Blackhawks the big winners of day 1 of FA. The Blackhawks in particular they are really high on:

The 29 other NHL teams can officially watch out for the Chicago Blackhawks, because they only needed to take one step backward before rising again as a top Stanley Cup contender for 2011-12 and beyond.

GM Stan Bowman made all of the right moves last offseason to retain his championship core, while getting out of former GM Dale Tallon's cap hell. Not only did he parlay those moves into picks and prospects to build version 2.0 of the Hawks' championship roster, but he's continued the quick and efficient retool this offseason -- getting out of defenseman Brian Campbell's bloated contract was the Houdini act of the summer.

LW Andrew Brunette may be getting long in the tooth, but the 37-year-old former Minnesota Wild winger can be a more than capable third-line and second-power-play-unit contributor. Signed at only $2 million for next season, he'll provide excellent veteran leadership, as well. Underrated D Steve Montador, coming off a fine year with the Sabres, is a solid addition to fill Campbell's vacated role. And look for a bounce-back from ex-Flyers LW Daniel Carcillo, who drew a staggering 3.0 penalties per 60 minutes of even-strength ice time in 2009-10.

I am not sure the Hawks are better right now, but it would appear that they will have a lot of flexibility come trade deadline time. This is the time that a team can go out and get a good deal if they have cap space. The Hawks also have some good young chips to offer in a trade.

I agree. I think the fair question isn't whether they are better than the cup winning team, but whether they are better than last year, and by how much.

This team will be a serious contender IF Keith, Seabrook and to a lesser extent, Hammer, return to their form of two years ago.

It will probably surprise no one to hear this, but I love what Bowman did to rebuild the 4th line.

Montador was a great pickup. If Lalonde is ready to be the 7th defenseman, this is a great way to work him in.

Just over three months now until we get this thing started. Already can't wait.

The other benefit of these moves is that it should make Scott expendable. He was always a liability and the necessity of carrying a DG is debatable at best. Carcillo might not be as intimidating but he can actually play hockey.

What I find a little unsettling is that it seems like Bowman is pandering to the mouth breathers. On the other hand, I like the defensive pairings provided Campoli signs.

What will be interesting to see is whether young guys like Morin and Beech will get a chance this year.

I know I'm a bit of a mouth breather sometimes when it comes to hockey, so perhaps I'm biased, but I don't think that's what Bowman is doing. It's not like he signed Tim McCracken. Like you said, Carcillo has some value if he can keep his head out of his ass.

And Mayers is a gritty guy near the end of his rope but a solid 3rd/4th line guy.

Avoided arbitration with Stalberg:

Money seems about right. Hopefully he will show a more consistent effort next year.

Stalberg is the Shawon Dunston of Hockey- has skills and sometimes shows them but is never as good as he should be. I was a sucker for Dunston, so I'm pulling for Stalberg.

With Stalberg in the fold, hopefully that's another foot out the door for Scott.

He's just so frustrating because of his electrifying speed, but he has hands of stone. Trouble is, I'm not sure that can be coached.
