We were apparently very close to trading Campbell to an unidentified team (Columbus is being speculated), but he waived his no-trade clause to block the deal.

That sucks. I understand that he was probably our best defenseman last season, but that contract is an albatross. We wouldn't have had to worry about the cap at all if we were able to dump that contract.

btw, the Draft is on Versus right now.

I'm pretty sure he did the exact opposite of waiving his no trade clause.

Correct. I'm dumb.

Brouwer traded to Washington for the 26th overall draft pick. Pretty good value for him, I'd say.

Are the Hawks clearing space to make a run at Richards?

Maybe if they managed to trade Soupy. Can't see the, going after any high priced players as we stand right now. The Brouwer trade is interesting though, seeing as we need to be acquiring depth, not losing what little we have.

oh man, this is huge.

this franchise is looking gooood. hossa's contract is the only one that looks even slightly bad now, and it's still not that bad.

so we've got 3 elite forwards, 2 elite young defensemen, and a young promising goalie all locked up for the future and we now have very good cap maneuverability to fill in the rest with quality pieces.

wait, has there been speculation that LA is going to flip richards? where is the richards talk coming from? i haven't heard anything.

is LA in a bad cap situation or something?

Wrong Richards. Brad Richards of the Stars is a FA.

I heard about Brouwer last night, and that was surprising enough. Campbell too?!

This makes perfect sense though. Tallon needed to spend cash to hit the new salary floor. I heard him interviewed on XM during the draft last night and he was talking about how they "needed" to spend some money. Here you go.

Plus there's some justice in all this, obviously.

Moving forward, Bowman is a player in everything now if he wants to be. Amazing how quickly he has managed to turn the cap situation around. Great work.

Hopefully some team that needs to get to the cap floor will take him as a backup. Dale, I'm looking at you.

Pretty sure he won't count against our cap next year either so whatever.

considering the way things looked when the Kane/Toews bonuses showed up after the cup, Bowman has done an amazing job.

we were supposed to be in all kind of trouble, and now (just a year later) how are the hawks looking?

- we didn't lose any of our top 4 forwards (i thought for sure we'd have had to dump Sharp by now)

- we didn't lose one of our top 3 d-men (even though Hjlamarsson was shaky this season, i still like him better than Campbell... even without considering contracts)

- we came out at least even on the goaltending situation (probably). Crawford and Niemi seem to be comparable going forward, and we got Crawford at about 1.5m a year cheaper than Niemi.

Meanwhile, we were able to extend Seabrook/Hjalmarsson, and somehow got rid of Campbell's contract. Every move he's made his been right. Byfuglian/Ladd/Versteeg was the expendable ones and he wasn't afraid to trade any of them just because they were heroes in the Cup run and suddenly fan favorites (Byfuglian).

Blackhawks are looking good long-term.

Long term we are looking good but switching attention to this year, we have a lot of work to do. Losing Campbell was a good move but hurts the team in the short term. We were already low on depth but losing Brouwer cuts that even more.

Anyone know a comprehensive NHL rumor site? I am interested to see who the Hawks are looking at?
