I think the Hawks are going to give every chance for Kruger to win the 2nd C job, and it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't take it over at sometime during the season. Likewise, Morin is going to crack the roster -- maybe not right away, but sometime soon. He was really set back by injuries last season at the World Juniors and Rockford. But eventually, he's going to be the #1 LW.

The Hawks are led by StanBow and ScotBow. They know what they are doing -- look at Detroit's success. The two teams really are mirror images of one another in terms of long-term construction. This offseason was about undoing some salary cap damage and ensuring that the core was taken care of and surrounded by solid, physical players who are also veterans. One thing is clear: StanBow has a salary figure in mind for pretty much every position on the team and when a guy like Campoli wants more? He'll be gone -- but the team won't jerk him around and leave him dangling.

Right now, I think the Hawks are a better team than they were last year, and they have enormous talent in the pipeline. Furthermore, they have more players than they need, which will lead to competition to play. And that's a really good thing. Guys who don't work hard or who won't do what Q wants won't play. End of story.

Sharpie signs 5-year extension

Niiiiice.

Our core is Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp, Seabs, Keith and they are all signed for at least the next 4 seasons. Bolland is a borderline core member and he's signed the next 3 seasons.

As shitty as it was to get rid of Ladd, Byfug, Campbell and Versteeg, the fact that we were able to survive our insanly tough cap situation with our 6 best (or at least most important) players signed to long term deals, and still have flexibility to build around them and a lot of young talent is a credit to Stan Bowman and co.

According to capgeek, Sharp was expected to have a cap hit of 3.9 million. With this extension (5 years, 30 mil), his cap hit will be somewhere around 6 million. The Hawks have 24 players signed with a projected 950,000 in cap space after Sharp. And I'm assuming since the NHL roster size is 23, one of those players won't make the team thus their contract won't count against the cap. But I'm kinda a NHL cap noob so I don't know if I am 100% right.

This doesn't affect his cap hit for this year. His 3.9 stays intact, next year begins the extension, at 5.9 per.

That's a hefty price to pay for Sharp, whom I think I'd have rather traded then extended.

Sharp's price would be diminished this season since he was a free agent to be. In truth, the time to have traded him was right after the Cup. This is a pretty good deal. Sharp can play just about anything the Hawks need him to play, and I think will serve just fine as the 2nd Center until Kruger can take it over (or Mike McNeill if he pans out the way everyone thinks he will).

Yeah, he can play a few positions, but none of them at an elite level. He's an acceptable 2nd line center if you can't find a real one.

He's a nice player, but a $6m cap hit for the guy as he enters his 30's is a bit much for what he offers.

I tend to agree, although the salary inflation this offseason suggests that's probably his FMV. Now, given the Hawks situation it may not be in their best interests to give him the contract (that's where I agree with you), but that number is about right for him.

If he performs well this season, he will be tradeable.

Sure, I could see a team like Winnipeg or some other organization looking for headlines (Stanley Cup winning goal scorer) signing him to such a contract, but they seem to have gotten zero "hometown discount" or "sign a year before you actually hit free agency discount". If that's what he could get on the market, let him go on the market.

Can't argue with that. My wife thought that when she first saw him during a game we watched on tv during the Stanley Cup season.

There were a few seasons before the Cup season when all they had to market this team was his face.

I couldn't get her to watch hockey until last season.

Single-game tickets go on sale in less than 30 minutes.

Picked up 2nd row seats right next to the hawks bench for the 2nd game of the year against Winnipeg. Pretty pumped about that as I haven't sat that close in years (the last time was at Chicago Stadium where I sat on the glass).

Also picked up 300 level seats to that Saturday game against the Bruins and the 12/30 Wings game. Pretty happy with that.

That's awesome. I'm passing on buying Hawks tickets right now because I'm going to be dropping several hundred for a pair to a game in Toronto in November. Those tickets are insanely expensive.

I'm waiting for Blues tickets to go on sale. Planning on grabbing 2 for the Dec. 3rd Hawks game. Works perfectly into my work schedule.

I'll likely end up getting tickets to that one too. Can't beat Saturday night Blues-Hawks games.
