Yeah, that Howard deal really sort of [expletive] the bed for everyone. What an awful, awful contract.

I couldn't believe the terms when I heard them. The guy isn't even top 5 at his position.

My favorite part was a friend of mine who is a diehard Phillies fan justifying it by saying that "Howard was owed it for all the cheap years he gave them." Brilliant.

Most Phillies fans I know think he's neck and neck with Pujols for best 1B in the game. Then again, the Phils fans I know are total homers.

At the time I was happy because I thought it would screw the Cards when it came to re-signing Pujols. I didn't think about that one hard enough, I guess. Still, I think in Fielder's case his body is going to work against him, at least when it comes to the years he will get. Plus, you can point to Adrian Gonzalez, a more recent signing, and say Prince isn't the player he is, and should be paid less.

I wouldn't mind Prince at 5/110-5/120. I'm beginning to think Pujols might not be the best idea, if he gets away from the Cards at all. This year has brought his value way down. I'll waver on that opinion, I'm sure.

I don't know many Phillies fans, but this friend of mine is just like that in regards to Howard and Pujols. When the rumors about the Howard for Pujols trade came up last year he thought the Cardinals would have to kick him in more and "no way" would he trade the two of them straight up. He would, however, have traded Howard for Holliday. Go figure.

I remember they had this debate on MLB network when there was a rumor, and Mitch Williams said he would hesitate to trade Howard for Pujols straight up. Of course, Williams is a moron, but still.

I initially read that as "Mitch Richmond" and was really confused as to why they were talking to him on the MLB Network.

Mitch Richmond, one of the more underrated NBA players of the 90's.

As much as I like what Penas giving us, hes going to have to do a lot more to fool me into not wanting Fielder or Pujols. He might end up getting himself a nice 3 year deal though from someone if hes willing to wait until those 2 are off the table.

It's really too bad Carlos isn't 4-5 years younger. I really like his approach and his attitude. His defense is none too shabby, either.

I predict a final line in the .240/.370/.550 range, but I pray that doesn't motivate the powers that be to try and retain him. As much as I like the guy, you have to try and deal him.

I'd gladly take that line over the next 3 years. I doubt Pujols/Fielder will be worth 12-15 million more than that.

Pena has had an OBP that high twice in his career, and a SLG that high once.

I said i'd gladly take that line for the next 3 years. I was speaking hypothetically.

So then what's the point of noting that Pujols/Fielder won't be that much better? The reason those guys would get more money is they are better bets to be significantly better. You pay a premium for dependable quality.

I was just referring to the previous poster who said he didn't want the powers that be to try and retain him. If he could put that line over three years I'd have no problem retaining him.

And the other person noted how completely unlikely that is to happen. I too would take the best that Pena could possibly do spread over 3 years.

Damn Pena is now 4th in the NL in HRs and 9th in MLB.

Good to see at least a couple of positives emerge from this season. Now let's ship him out of town!

Pawn the $5 million he's owed next year off on another team and nab a decent prospect in the process and call it a day.

This would definitely be the time to sell high.

Absolutely. LH power is always in demand. If we kick in his remaining salary we could get a damn good prospect or two for him.

That'd better be a damn good prospect for $5M.

Or pawn the $5 million off and use it to make sure we sign guys like Maples, Dunston, Vogelbach, etc.

Pay the $5 million, sign those guys anyway, and get a better prospect.

Sure, if that's where the money ends up going.
