Oh, my bad. Right above my post.

Oh well, yeah. We missed on Berkman. If I had to say, it was probably defense and injury concerns with age that tipped the balance to Pena. Not being lefty or not, obviously. And it was obviously the wrong move, in hindsight.

We're only 30 games into the season, I'm not yet ready to say Berkman will be more valuable this season. Odds are certainly against it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that they both end up ~800-850 OPS players.

meh, give him a break. It was pretty clear that he meant at this current time, it looks like we made the wrong choice between the two. Which is certainly the case.

I still think it was the right choice at the time of the decision, though.

How soon until someone argues that it wouldn't have mattered because of Cardinal pixie dust as if that's a real thing?

Don't forget the curse of the goat.

Lance Berkman is 35 (two years older than Pena), nowhere near the defensive first baseman Pena is, and has not been that much of a better hitter than Pena has been over the last 3 years (140 OPS+ vs. 122 OPS+).

Berkman might end up being a much better player than Pena all year. He also might breakdown mid-season and be a non-factor during the last stretch of the season. It's just way too early to judge this now, but at the time of the signing I thought Pena was a better bet than Berkman.

Pena is not and has not been a better all around player than Berkman. Never. Just my opinion. I wonder if the Cubs showed Berkman any interest.

You mean in any single season? You're going to have to explain 2007 to me.

Hasn't Berkman been battling injuries for the last few seasons? I'm guessing that is the reason that Hendry went with Pena. It certainly wasn't money. It is also possible that Berkman didn't have any interest in coming to the Cubs. Couldn't blame him for thinking that the Cardinals had the better team and gave him a better chance to play in the playoffs.

Injuries, but defense probably significantly played into things given that whoever was manning 1B was going to be having Aramis and (especially) Castro across the diamond.

Abe you're going to have a hard time convincing me that Chris Sabo was a better all around player than Barry Bonds. Get to work.

Excellent.

What are the odds Quade keeps him buried in the lineup? Pretty damn good.

Just tied it up in the bottom of 9. Nice.

He still sucks.

Hard-hitting analysis there.

He sucked for a few weeks in a cold April where he was dealing with an injury. It seems a bit premature to write him off... especially given the signs of life he's showing (as Mojo pointed out).

Well, Vinestal has decided definitively that Pena sucks AND that Barney is the 2B of the future after one month. He knows things.

Wow you guys are awesome, this is the reason these boards are a ghost town and there are like 8 people that post here on a regular basis. I never said Barney is the 2b of the future I said I liked what I saw from him so far. Christ learn to read and stop talking for other people. If you run off everyone with an opinion sooner or later you'll be the only ones here left to listen to yours, of course that may be the way you want it and maybe its better that way.
