Yes, I also should have mentioned Remy Abell's treatment. Abell had not played at all the last two games -- and only two minutes the game before -- yet he is the correct substitution, as a freshman, with four minutes left in a close road game?* Perplexing.

 

 

*Note: This is not meant to be in any way derogatory to Abell. He seems like a nice player with a lot of a potential. He's also shown an ability to take, and make, some shots that show some "onions" for a freshman.

 

Abell has been solid every time he has hit the court. The only thing I've heard as a possible explanation is that he is not a good practice player at all. Which I understand the concept of only playing guys that practice hard/well/whatever but I still think the kid can help IU out in the games. Especially when a particularly quick guard is giving us trouble.

In general, I still find myself not understanding Crean's sub patterns and timeout usage in multiple games.

 

I'd posit that's because they make very little sense and are almost irrational.

 

Allowances for not remembering perfectly, but when Wisconsin took their first lead of the second half at around nine minutes left, and the crowd woke up, my guess is that probably every other coach in the Big Ten calls a timeout (especially those coaching teams that seem to be a bit mentally weak, especially on the road, and lack a point guard to settle things down). Heck, Penn State called a timeout in the game at Bloomington on Sunday when IU opened the second half with two straight baskets. Oh well.

 

Edit: As to your other post, I like Abell quite a bit and believe he deserves more playing time. I wondered during the last two games why he wasn't playing at all.

Matt Roth has a hilarious 181.3 ORtg buoyed by an absurd 61% shooting on 3s, a 4.8% TORate (would be 2nd in the country) if he qualified by minutes) and 13-13 from the line.

 

What I can't stand is on the stupid IU Scout board people keep trumpeting how IU is 4th overall in offensive efficiency. Yeah, not looking all that efficient lately. They stand around too damn much. The offense only looks good when they are hitting 3 pointers. BUT THEIR OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY RATING IS GREAT SO WHAT DO I KNOW? MY EYES LIE TO ME! :?

withey has sat a bunch with fouls. some long caroms. some bad rebounding.
