Didn't see a minute of the game due to a meeting I had to attend. I guess it's good to see IU fight back from being down big early. Was the defense just terrible?

They had some great stretches, but just really didn't seem up to the challenge. Zeller getting in foul trouble and Hulls' terrible shooting really killed them. The offense struggled to move the ball on way too many possessions. Frustrating game.

That was right on the borderline (down 3, ~50 seconds left)of what I was talking about from the Illinois-Mizzou game. I think I'd have fouled there if I'm Iowa. Purdue has been really efficient on offense, foul the worst shooter on the floor the second he touches the ball.

ETA: And you absolutely do not go for a 2 there.(8 seconds left, down 5) That's just dumb.

i love it when announcers say that teams "don't need a 3", bite my ass, if they want to win they do you animal.

I'm fairly happy with the way Iowa played. They made some dumb decisions and couldn't defend much and that cost them the win. They have a tough schedule ahead and I have a hard time seeing them not start 0-7 at the very least.

I'll take that. Iowa has some nice players and Basabe looked good. He couldn't miss for most of the game. Purdue shot a disgustingly normal 64% from the line. Winning on the road in the B1G ain't easy (just ask Crean) and Iowa had a huge free throw advantage. I've been missing that kind of performance from DJ Byrd.

Agreed. I wanted the foul, especially when it's not in Hummel or Smith's hands. As far as going for the 2 on that last possession, it just shows the complete lack of basketball instincts this team has. It doesn't matter if you have to shoot a forced 3, you need a 3 there.

We didn't take advantage of your small lineup and get it to Basabe enough in the 2nd half. Everyone was so worried about getting to the line once we were in the bonus that we just got a lot of wild forced shots off the dribble. Overall though our offense was pretty impressive against that defense.

Too bad, that was a good opportunity for the win. Good crowd on break but every time it got loud and everyone was on their feet Purdue blew past us for a layup or kickout 3. Purdue was just the smarter team and we couldn't keep them from getting into the lane off the dribble.

Indiana is going to be very good next year.

Not because of their recruiting class, but because Verdell Jones will have exhausted his eligibility by then.

Yeah, I don't know too many Purdue fans that were confident going into last night, after losing in your building with JJ and E'Twaun last year. It was definitely a game Iowa could have won down the stretch.

Yeah, Zeller was pretty soft last night. He wasn't very aggressive in calling for the ball. And his teammates didn't go out of their way to get it to him. When he did get shots, he didn't go up as strong as I would have hoped. But ultimately, this team needs to learn how to throw an entry pass into the post. Even if Zeller is having an off game, he can get to the line for points and get people in foul trouble.

I always worry about this team's shooting on the road. Hulls was pretty bad last night. Had several open shots that he missed.

I was proud of the team coming back from an 18-pt deficit on the road to take a 9-point lead, but can't allow a 20-0 run in the 2nd half. Defense wasn't any worse than any other game. They were just all or nothing on offense.

Terone Johnson is beyond terrible from the free throw line. Seriously, if someone held a gun to his mother's head and said Johnson only had to hit four of ten to save her life, he'd be better off making funeral arrangements. If Purdue has a slim lead with less than 5-6 minutes to play, he probably shouldn't be on the floor.

Byrd has had a couple solid games in a row. Painter needs to continue to give him more playing time.

Yeah, he might be the worst free throw shooter in the country, no joke. Unbelievable coming from a 4-Star guard! It really reduces his usefullness as a player because his bread and butter is driving to the rim and drawing fouls.

Thinking from an Illinois perspective, but also for some other opponents: Can Lawson/Carroll guard the post?

Leonard has a 4 inch advantage on both, and down the road Sullinger, Payne/Nix, Morgan, Zeller, and Sampson all seem to provide some big time mismatches be it through height, bulk, skill, or all 3.

I almost feel like Purdue would be better off going small, especially against a team unlikely to use a zone.

He's shooting 25% from the line in enough attempts (32) to make it alarming. Anthony Johnson is at 48.5% in 33 attempts and Lawson is at 34.6% in 26 attempts, so they're not exactly lighting it up either.

Unfortunately, Carroll and Marcius aren't doing much of anything, so it's pretty much all on the shoulders of Hummell, Barlow, Jackson, Smith, and Byrd at this point, with Hummel as the acting center.

Lawson has some skills defensively and plays bigger than he is. Unfortunately, he's what you might call overly aggressive, which has led to significant foul trouble.

Carroll is meh.

Carroll can't guard anyone near as quick as Leonard or Zeller. He also can't score on them. I'm honestly not sure if the kid can dunk, I've never seen him even try that I can recall. He seems like a great kid, he's just outmatched as an athlete.

Lawson is tremendously athletic and has a B1G body so he won't get pushed around - but he plays like a true freshman and gets into foul trouble (with last night being the exception). Marcius has the same trouble as Lawson with less athleticism.

If Lawson develops any sort of jumper he will be a stud but right now he just gets cleanup dunks and layups and has a little bit of a hook shot that he can score with on occasion. He should be playing as a 4 if we had a true C. When Hummel is on the bench it's not unusual to see 6'7 Lawson and 6'5 Byrd as the 5/4.

Next year with Hammons and Simpson coming in along with Hale coming off his red-shirt year we will actually have a respectable front court. Of course Leonard and Zeller may be gone by then.

edit: sorry I put Lawson as 6' 9", he's more like 6' 7", I think.
