welp, i was hoping college bball would keep me mildly entertained until spring training. guess not...iowa state can't handle drake and the bright lights of the knapp center.

why were they playing drake on the road?

The four D1 schools in the state play a round robin every year. I guess because Iowa and ISU are generous, cause there is no other explanation.

yeah, it's kinda stupid, but iowa state shouldn't lose to [expletive] drake regardless of where they play. awful.

We're way outclassed on the talent front here. I mean, Wesley and Teahan are former walkons, and we're expecting them to contribute big minutes.

Gasaway had an interesting point on twitter the other day, tonight is the first game where KU is clearly inferior from a talent perspective in at least 5 years.

KU's wizard was killed by harry potter in the off-season. now all they have is their brigade of northeastern gypsies (much less powerful and rare than the southern gypsies employed by kentucky), their stable of texas oil tycoons and the dump trucks full of money.

EDIT: and the island.

I'm still not wavering from my prediction that KU wins the conference. Kentucky is going to make a lot of teams look awful and Kansas hung with them.

What's surprising is how weak KU is at forward. Or maybe Kentucky just made them non-existent.

No, we're very thin there. Robinson is the only legit player.

They've won the conference 7 years in a row, I think. Even though this looks like a down year for the Jayhawks I still have them at the top until someone knocks them off. If they had someone who could coach, Baylor would be scary. They have a ton of talent. Texas lost a lot from last year. A&M has a new coach and several new faces in the rotation, so who knows how we'll turn out. Not sure about Mizzou or Okie Lite.

Annoyed to turn on the Badger game on ESPN3 only to find out @thekapman is doing the color for them!

Video quality on ESPN3 is really good though.

As for the Badgers, Brust is filling it up, though I worry that we do not have a low post presence on a consistent basis and we'll be chuckers.

Apparently, IU was only 2.5 point favorites in Evansville tonight, and the CBS computer picked Evansville by 3. IU is up by 25 at the half. Of course, they are making every shot they take tonight.

Ugly 2nd half, lots of fouls, lots of 1-on-1 plays by Evansville that were allowed to get to the rim. The announcers were raving about how good IU was. This was probably the best they can possibly play offensively. Very high assist-basket ratio. 5 players in double figures, and 7 players with at least 8 points. Butler should be a good test at the end of the month, but Butler lost to Evansville in OT. Can't complain about tonight, but this team is still a work in progress. Watford finally showed up to play. Jones has been very good taking care of the basketball so far. You would think the team had been playing with Zeller for 3-years instead of 3 games. Have no idea how to keep people from the paint when he's out. Going to get ugly when they face a team that gets very physical with Zeller and gets him in foul trouble. Just hoping we're better than people project. 1st IU road win in 2 years.

Oklahoma State needed a furious rally to send the game to OT before finally holding off UT-San Antonio. Sounds like they won't be knocking Kansas off their pedestal anytime soon.

Big West with the upset!

Long Beach is a tournament team this year, no?

Purdue is playing another off the radar but good team today, Iona. Actually the Puerto Rico tip-off tournament they're in has a few good/decent teams. Temple, Alabama, Wichita St., Maryland... If Purdue can win this it should be a nice confidence booster and some great experience. That being said, after High Point earlier this week I could see a loss to Iona today pretty easily. It's definitely going to be an up and down year.

They've claimed to have won the conference 7 years in a row at least.

I'm not sure how much we can gather out of these games for IU. They're obviously much more athletic then the teams they're playing and are just overwhelming them. It is fun to be back in a position though where these games are not a struggle anymore. It will be interesting to see what happens when they come up against some teams that will test them.

Watching them I can't help but think about next year either. Taking only 1 player out of the top 7-8 and replacing it with 5 freshman of which 3 of them will probably contribute immediately? This team could be good, but that team is very likely to be good to great. Plus that team will have to be one of the top 2-3 athletic teams in the Big 10.

The Big Ten is going to be very good over the next few years. There is a truckload of talent coming into several programs. IU will be off the floor, Purdue will have more 4 star talent on their roster at one time than I can recall, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Illinois (depending on Weber situation), OSU... Assuming Sullinger goes pro, next year could be a wide open race with what, 4-6 teams with a shot at the title? Hell, even Iowa has gotten their recruiting going well again.

It's pretty difficult not to be getting excited about IU after the last three years. I thought Evansville might be a difficult game; it was not at all. IU is clearly more athletic and talented than they have been. However, as you said, it's going to be hard to tell anything until IU plays better competition. They've played three nobodies. They were better last year than the year before and it resulted in all of two more wins (and one less Big Ten win). They still have some obvious problem areas. Before the season I would have agreed with SSR's under-18 wins prediction. At this point, I no longer do (though not much over 18).

Next year, the team should actually be good. And not in the way this year's team might be good enough to garner some bubble attention if things go right. Actually good.

Illinois pre-season, or Illinois halfway through failing expectations?

And freshman PG Cezar Guererro went for 29, including 6 in like 5 seconds to force OT. He was down to Iowa and OSU, told players and possibly coaches on his visit in March he was coming to Iowa and his brother talked him out of it. Although if we had gotten him it might have lowered our chances with Gesell which may have lowered our chances with Woodbury.

You must be forgetting Butch's dislocated elbow vs. OSU a few years back.
