He was 0/4 with 2 K's last year.

With Pena, Soto and Johnson on the bench....why did a reliever take an AB? Even Z would have been a better choice. This irritates the hell outta me. WTF??

Colvin has been really patient today. Love seeing that.

Hard to get excited about it when apparently he has said he doesn't like to walk (don't have a quote on it... heard it somewhere along the way in the ~50 hrs of sports radio I hear a week).

Even if he's just taking pitches for the sole purpose of finding a good pitch to hit, I'm fine with that.

Definitely. Not saying it isn't nice to see him taking a patient approach to his ABs. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Russel is still pitching.

Crap, I missed that Russell pitched in the previous inning. Sorry. My bad.

If Cashner is OK and the Cubs win, this will be one hell of a lesson for Quade as far as roster management goes:

1. Try to avoid being caught without Marmol and Wood on the same day.

2. If you are, make sure you aren't working with a short bench also (i.e. starting Koyie Hill and being unable to bring Soto in as a PH)

3. Jeff Samardzija sucks.

So far I am liking what I see from the offense in general. They haven't done any one thing particularly great, but they have done a lot of things good, including working the count and overall having patience.

If it keeps up, it would easily change my perception of this team from my preseason prediction of 75-80 wins to something around 83-88 wins.

Colvin doesn't look like he's gonna be an awful backup at 1B. He hasn't had to dig any throws out of the dirt today though.

I love the K/BB ratio of the offense so far. 25 K's to 18 BB's through almost 5 games now. For a NL offense that's unbelievably good. But of course the Cubs haven't faced any of the high strikeout pitchers in the league yet.

Nice job, Russell.

Hopefully Marshall (I assume) can finish this thing off.

Someone said this offense reminded them 2008's. Not in the sense that they'll score 200,000 runs but in the sense that there are few serious weaknesses. In the normal lineup, I'd consider Barney to be the only hitter a team really doesn't have to be worried about. Everyone else is a threat to do something at some level.

Were there any further updates on Cashner?

And there's the first one.

I know that a late inning lead is no time to bring this up, but this is also the type of offense that can congeal into one large black hole. It isn't at all inconceivable that Ramirez, Soriano, Byrd, and Pena all have overlapping heavy slumps. If that happens during a stretch of 3 games in which Castro does NOT post a 1.650 OPS, things have the potential to get frustrating in a hurry.

I really hope it doesn't come to that.

What offense would do well when three of the top hitters have heavy slumps?

Um, hi. Excuse me. Why is Reed Johnson playing for Fukudome?

I guess to allow Marshall to pitch the 10th if need be?
